Everybody knows that people work for money. A lot of managers know that people are inherently lazy and will do as little as they can get away with, for their pay. Thankfully, so much ‘monitoring-ware’ has been developed that they can be kept an eye on. But it’s still uncomfortable if you can’t see them working in the office. On the plus side, people that do work and achieve good results, are rewarded. Even then, after a few weeks they don’t seem grateful anymore. People! If you’re the Boss, you know you can’t just be ‘one of the girls’ or ‘one of the lads’. But you have to be friendly if not a friend. You don’t want to be Rules Rita or Rules Roy, do you? Only the brave escape the fortress of Hierarchical Authority. Going ‘out there’ without your protection feels scary. In the beginning, it probably will be scary. This Leader does not put his or her ideas before the Team. The Team contribute on the same level as the leader and all ideas are valued. Have you ever been in a brainstorming meeting where after a couple of hours excited, passionate creativity the Leader summarises, and their preferred idea is chosen? Being a democratic Leader means having to choose an idea that you “know” is not as good as your own. But success is created from good ideas passionately implemented. The Leader has to be careful not to use this on a decision that could go dreadfully wrong and bust the business! A delicate balanc ..read more

There are times when autocratic leadership can be the right thing. How about “Run! Everybody out! The buildings on fire!” Is this good leadership? Or would it be better to have a well-rehearsed team of people organised to manage the fast and safe evacuation of the building? The Boss shouting run is unlikely to make that evacuation any smoother. So that’s not a good example of necessary autocratic leadership. I’m sure you have an example. The charismatic leader knows the team. They all think the leader is amazing. What could possibly go wrong? There is a boundary between friendly and being a friend. The leader is part of the management team too. What happens when faced with incompatible demands from the team and senior management? How do you square that? How do you avoid losing the trust of your team?   The post Charismatic Leadership appeared first on Motivation Matters ..read more
