Fifie Friday social get together with a few clubs in Fife
Finally broke free from those stormy shackles and hit the waves for our long-awaited Fifie Friday rowing! What a victory against the weather gods!
First-time rowing action? Check!
Epic chats with neighbouring clubs? Double check!
Food that fuelled legends? Triple check!
Winter wind = our arch-nemesis, but we got back out there! Two boats braved the coast like champs. The sun peeked out—just to tease—but we laughed in its face!
Shout out to our rowing fam from Elie, Pittenweem, Crail, Wormit, and North Queensferry clubs! Y’all mad ..read more

Saturday 6th April saw the Cockenzie and Port Seton Coastal Rowing Club (‘Boatie Blest‘ ) Regatta. Picking a date so early in the season always has weather risks and, in the run up to this event ‘Storm Kathleen’ started threatening to cause havoc. However, the forecast to 1300 was excellent and we were hopeful that the north facing harbour, well sheltered from southerly winds by low hills and the village buildings might provide sufficient protection. Despite the weather warnings we were delighted that Broughty Ferry, Dunbar, Eastern, Eskmuthe, Newhaven, North Berwick, R ..read more

This weekend, the 13th/14th of April, I was invited by South Skye and Lochalsh Coastal Rowing
Club to instruct a second SCRA basic cox course at Kyleakin harbour. The weather forecast was
terrible, 22-38mph from the WSW and heavy rain.
In collaboration with the club secretary and SCRA board member Melanie Grey of FOCCRs and
Lorn CRC we considered cancelling the course or transferring it to Plockton or Dornie, but in the
end the high ground of South Skye provided so much shelter that the water near and inside the
harbour was safely rowable.

As the new regatta season starts to get underway we look forward to seeing and hearing lots of great rowing events across the country. To ensure that clubs are all safe and that events go ahead without any incidents we have put together the following document to provide a few helpful reminders to hosting and visiting clubs.
Regatta Preparations
We all love to read about events and regattas – who took part, what the racing was like and most of all who won. So can we ask that the organisers of events please put in a report of the day with a few lovely photos so that we can share this with ..read more

All of us who row in St Ayles Skiffs owe a quietly spoken Australian boat designer a big debt of gratitude. In 2008 the Scottish Fisheries Museum approached Iain Oughtred to design a boat for 4 rowers and a cox, to be made from a kit by Alec Jordan.
Iain chose the shape of the Fair Isle Skiff, a traditional Shetland boat used for fishing off Fair Isle in the open Atlantic. This boat has amazing seakeeping qualities, which is just as well since they used to carry stones as ballast and none of the crews could swim.
Iain grew up in Sydney and sailed, built and designed fast sailing di ..read more

The SCRA gathers incident reports from clubs on a wide range of aspects. Having looked at 3 similar incidents this guidance and learning points is shared to all clubs. Together with the help of the clubs much of the learning outcomes specified by them are similar and should be shared to the wider skiff community as it may help.
In one instance a crew member sadly had a heart attack shortly after finishing rowing. The person involved made a full recovery, thanks to the sharp actions of the crew involved. The club have kindly sent us the following which they have adopted for future use:

Nairn Coastal Rowing club ran its first ever skiff regatta on the 16th of September. Our guiding principal was to keep everything small and as simple as possible, and use the learning from this to do it bigger and better in future years. This necessarily meant that we could only invite a limited number of clubs to come and row with us. The only exception to the keep it simple rule was in deciding to have a course with lanes rather than single turning buoys; while this may have made umpiring more straight-forward, it certainly gave Robbie Gordon, course layer-in-chief, a significant challenge ..read more
