Roster: Brendon Hackwill, Carl Rodwell, John Gardiner, John Heard, Ken Cole, László Hódi, Lindsay Gaze, Michael Ah Matt, Mike Dancis, Scott Davie, Werner Linde, Bill Wyatt
Result: 9th (4-5)
1964 was just the Boomers second time at the Olympics and at the time was the only occasion outside of when Australia hosted the Games in 1956.
60 years ago the basketball tournament consisted of 16 teams, with Australia’s 9th place and 4-5 record an over-achievement compared to their then minnow status.
Their wins came against Peru, Korea, Mexico, and Japan, and two of their five losses came b ..read more

There are some great stories of successful basketball players who grew up around the game; inspired by their parents who were coaches or administrators, they spent countless hours in basketball stadiums as children and eventually fell in love with the sport.
Think Andrew Gaze literally growing up in a house adjoining the old Albert Park Basketball Stadium in Melbourne as his dad, Lindsay, ran the stadium. There’s Josh Giddey, who got to experience professional basketball at a young age as father Warrick finished his playing career and remained actively involved in ..read more

The 2024 U18 Australian National Championships are in the books, and last month’s girls tournament was one for the ages. With some big upsets, huge individual performances, and the two best teams battling it out in the gold medal game, it was an action-packed week of hoops that would be hard to top.
We’re now a few weeks removed from the event, making it as good a time as any to look back on some of the players that starred on the big stage. This isn’t a list of the best prospects, or an MVP ranking, but rather a deep dive into a handful of the female athletes that stood up and showed out.

Happy Friday #AussieHoops! Just wanted to share the news on a brand new feature to our publication: The Pick and Roll now has its very own subscriber chat.
This is intended to be a conversation space exclusively for paid subscribers — not quite Twitter (sorry, X), closer to a group chat, or forum. It’s early days, but we’d love for this to become a space…

Let’s say you’ve been promoted to the GM of a WNBL franchise. Congratulations! It’s the offseason, and you’re building a roster from scratch. And for the sake of this bizarre exercise, you need to blindly pick a player solely based on statistics:
Player A: 31 minutes a night, 13.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, shooting 43.2% from the field and 32.0% from three.
Player B: 31 minutes a night, 15.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.5 apg, shooting 41.7% from the field and 27.5% from three.
You’ve probably realised one of these players is Issie Bourne. She’s Player A. But you might be surprised to know ..read more

Another school holiday period has passed us, and with it, another Australian National Championship in Queensland this year. The annual Under 18 event may be the most intriguing of all age groups, with 16 and 17 year olds emerging into potential stardom as growth spurts hit and skillsets bourgeon.
A true superstar in this 2007 and 2008-born age group hasn’t emerged just yet, but the quality lies in its depth of talent with pro-level potential. Let’s delve into some of those names.

In amongst the thick of the action will be a number of Australians. Some return to their respective teams, while others are getting a fresh start in new cities. With only 144 WNBA roster spots available, some Aussies will have to prove their worth in training camp and preseason games (which tip off in a week!) in order to make a final ros ..read more
