Maida Vale has been a bit of a favourite spot of mine, so I’ve decided to also write about a few other paintings completed over the years.
Initially I am going to talk about this large oil painting which is a scene along the Regent’s Canal in Little Venice, and then I will be visiting a number of places that I have painted over the years.

You can buy a limited edition print of The Caravan here.
A fictional scene based on the many traveller caravans situated around the foot of Glastonbury Tor in Somerset.
At it’s core, the painting is a celebration of the idea that happiness is about fulfilling and celebrating our needs rather than the mere accumulation of what we want or desire.
Almost all the plants in the painting are common weeds such as the much-hated bindweed. You can also find Buddleia, known as the Butterfly plant. You can find Buddleia along railways lines and derelict sites all over the UK. When we had a house in Hackn ..read more

In this blog I am going to talk about an exhibition, namely my exhibition from the 14th of April to the 16th of June 2023 at The Crown pub in Pilton, Somerset. Pilton is also the place that I’m fortunate enough to be able to call my home so i didn’t have to bring my paintings too far.
See the video below
What is in the exhibition?
The exhibition features several paintings which I produced over the past few years. And broadly speaking the locations feature London, Pilton (or there abouts) and New York.
So, I thought ‘Oh great idea for an exhibition title, London, Pilton, New York’.
I ..read more

I got a call from two local farmers who wanted to commission a painting of several their favourite animals. As a city person I know absolutely nothing about farms, in fact I find some farm animals a bit intimidating. Especially the larger cows. And most of the smaller ones. I was chased by cows when I first arrived in Somerset and have never quite got over the experience.
Nevertheless, I was still looking forward to having a guided tour around a proper working farm.
After a quick introduction we took a wonder around the sheds and fields. Accompanying us were two manic border Collies which ran ..read more

For this one I visited West London, getting-off at Warwick Avenue – probably one of London’s quietest tube stations – to specifically draw the community of Little Venice next to the Regents Canal.
Two communities in Maida Vale by the Regents Canal
Really, when I say ‘community’, I mean two communities. The first, known as Little Venice, is on the Regents Canal, mainly consisting of houseboats and converted barges, evoking a curious piece of rural England ploughing through the metropolis.
Although some cater to tourists, most of the boats and barges are fully residential and don’t go very ..read more

I concept for this painting came from a walk through London on a bleak January morning. It was one of those mornings which was intensely cold with that very thin yellow light that just seems to make things feel colder still.
Part of the walk took in Battersea Bridge. I had a mind to draw the house boats which huddle together on the North bank of the Thames in Chelsea. I arrived early as I wanted to catch the house boats with their lights still on. As it turned out I needn’t have ventured out early, today would never be fully light.
I crossed the bridge from the Battersea side and made my way a ..read more

It is January. It’s freezing cold. It’s by the sea , but I’ve decided to go out and do a small drawing of Clevedon Pier in Somerset. And a video to go with it.
It was once described by John Benjamin as the most beautiful peer in England and I think John Betjeman had a point, even on a day like this.
It was opened in 1869 as a tourist attraction and you could also get a paddle steamer to Wales from the end. Everything was fine until 1970 when two of spars collapsed, and it took a huge fundraiser, to get it back to what it looks like today. Anyway, back to the drawing ..read more
