Are You Fire or Are You Ice?

They say Iceland is "the land of fire and ice." I have to stay that's true, at least it was for my journey. While visiting, I got to explore and experience both the fire side of things, having visited the geothermal areas, and the ice, visiting the glacial lagoons. These are some of the images from the "fire" side of the equation. Are you more of a fire person? Or think the beach is too big and hot? No matter your type, Iceland will fine something for you. It's a magical place. Untile next time ..read more

Stories of the City

There are many synonyms for the word "story." A fable, a yarn, a tale, a narrative...the list goes on. There are many stories in some places. New Orleans is one of those places. There are so many stories in New Orleans, they call it "Storyville." In fact, Storyville was the original red-light district in New Orleans, but somehow the name stuck and some people still call all of New Orleans "Storyville" even to this day. New Orleans is one of those cities where, well, if only those buildings could talk they would have a lot to say. Imagine the stories they might share with us? Imagine al ..read more

It's Mardi Gras Week. Happy Fat Tuesday! While there is still a lot going on in the world, I'm happy to hear that the festivities for Mardi Gras are going to be held again this year. The krewes are out, the parades are happening, and the beads...well, what can I say about the beads? Yes, they are going to be flying around for sure, especially since we'd had a hiatus for a couple of years now. The beads are back, baby, the beads are back! While I'm not attending this year, I thought it would be a good time to remember some of the festivities from years past. This is a small sampli ..read more

Best of 2021

Ah, welcome to my wrap-up of 2021, the year that was. I wish I could say it was a great year. I wish I could say it was the year the pandemic crawled away. Alas, it was a year anyway, so it has that going for it. What can I say about 2021 that hasn't already been said? Maybe, "embrace the suck!" That pretty much sums it up, although there were a few bright spots here and there.  For the photos, starting at the top and working down:  10 - Swirls - this from the water gardens, it's a close up detail of some pottery with the colors enhanced. I had been wanting ..read more

So happy to announce the availability of my latest book. Ladies and gentlemen, it's "Beautiful Under Heaven." This work represents a visual exploration of Guilin, China and the surrounding areas. In 2017, I was one of several photographers selected to travel to Guilin on a photography excursion, this is the culmination of that work. The hardcover is 240 pages, with chapters representing Chinese proverbs. The eBook is 68 pages and is suitable for Apple or Android devices. When I was working on a book, I had the idea that I would compile all of my images from China. I had no idea the boo ..read more

Recently, I was interviewed by VoyageAustin Magazine, as part of their "Change-Makers" series. These are, "stories that inspire" and usually cover locals who bring about some form of change. In my interview, I share some backstory, basically how I got to be the way I am (!) some of the challenges I've faced along the way, info about Carol's Little World, and some advice for folks looking to secure a mentor (for example.)  I have to say, it was a great experience. The folks at VoyageAustin are professional and made the process as easy and painless as humanly possible. Thanks for al ..read more

Chinese Food

When I speak about travel to China, one of the questions that frequently comes up is, "What was the food like? Does the food in China taste anything like the stuff we call Chinese food?" If I'm being honest, I would have to say, yes, why yes actually it does taste a lot like what we call Chinese food. There is, however, one important caveat. Where I stayed in China (central China, near the city of Guilin) they cook and eat very little sugar. The one exception I seemed to find was that everyone eats a piece of sweet fruit after a big meal (passion fruit, melon, etc. is ..read more

Tea in China

On the outskirts of Guilin is a place called the Guilin Tea Research Institute, basically, a tea plantation that offers tours and insight into all things tea. You can access the institute fairly easily by taxi from the downtown city center and it's a splendid little trip into the countryside. While here, I also got to watch a tea ceremony and taste several varieties of tea. I also donned a silly hat and got to pick some tea myself, but I shall spare you those images. I will say my guide, Kevin (pictured above) did tell me I was slow but managed to get a leaf or two.&n ..read more
