A national monument in east Las Vegas? Some Nevadans hope so

Good morning, and welcome to the Indy Environment newsletter. I'm Amy Alonzo, the environment reporter for The Indy. In the late 1990s, my high school had an environmental club. With just a handful of members, we did a yearly cleanup project and wore T-shirts that said things like “save the manatees” — even though I doubt any of us had ever seen one.  The environmental movement has come a long way since then. I’ve seen 6-year-olds picking up garbage on the street who told me littering “makes the Earth sick.”  Some people say it’s too much — others say it’s about time.  Either wa ..read more

The estimated 4,000 students in the Moapa and Mesquite areas make up about 1 percent of the Clark County School District’s nearly 300,000 students.  Moapa Valley is located about an hour’s drive northeast from Las Vegas. Mesquite is another 37 miles northeast of Moapa, along the Arizona border.  Being so far away from the Clark County School District (CCSD)’s urban core has put the district’s rural schools at a disadvantage, said Jodi Thornley, chair of the Virgin Valley Community Education Advisory Board in Mesquite. It’s something they hope will change when the massive district bri ..read more

Nevada local government candidates: Who’s running in school board, city, county races
The Nevada Independent

During Nevada’s nearly two-week candidate filing period, hundreds of down-ballot candidates filed for crucial yet often under-the-radar local offices in the state’s two most populous counties. Though down-ballot races are often overshadowed in presidential election years, the races have significant consequences for day-to-day life in Nevada communities, such as school boards setting education policy and local governments overseeing land use permits and business licensure. Many local government races are nonpartisan, which means candidates are not identified by political party and all voters, r ..read more
