We all have seen by now the comparison of the hippo skull, that looks "fat, chunky" in the living animal, and the entelodon skull, that looks "scary, shrink wrapped" in reconstructions. I will try to clear some misconceptions about this recurring topic. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1c/Daeodon_shoshonensis_.png Lets start by stating that hippos are not fat. They are extremely heavily built in shape and musculature, with a barrel shaped torso and short limbs, a massive head and short neck. Their fat percentage is much lower than that of humans, but their abnormaly thick skin ..read more

Advice on prepping chalk fish (Upper chalk UK)

I recently found this fish fossilised in chalk at a site I go to. Usually I only find fragmentary remains and more complete specimens are quite rare! Everything is there, except the tail which was presumably still in the cliff where the boulder fell out. This is its current state, and does fit back together. I haven’t attempted preparing it as I have no clue on where to start, any advice would be much appreciated, either to leave it as it is or send it off? I want to prepare it myself to get the experience. submitted by /u/ShadowdragonO06 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Dinosaurs’ ability to mimic sound like some birds?

I ask this question with extremely minimal knowledge on bird/dinosaur vocalization capabilities or larynx shape. But there are a good amount of birds that can mimic sounds extremely well. Is it possible some dinosaurs may have also had this ability? I assume probably more-so avian dinosaurs than non-avian. submitted by /u/gorgo_nopsia [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hello, so I am going onto my third year of zoology hoping to go into a masters for palaeontology. I’m currently getting ready for my dissertation and decided I want to link zoology with paleo and I believe doing something with megafauna would be interesting. I was wondering if I could discuss it with anyone in those fields either in comments or messages. I need to come up with a question to answer for the dissertation as well as a analytical technique. I’ve done some research now on megafauna, gathering a dozen different definitions, example of modern and prehistoric megafauna from the Pleist ..read more

A couple questions about Icthyosaurus (plausible sounds and coloration)

So, for my tenth short story (which is still a bit of a ways away) I’ve had the idea of one involving a pod of Stenopterygius being ambushed by some Temnodontosaurus while on their way to shallow waters to give birth in Middle Jurassic Austria. One aspect that has kept me away from immediately jumping into writing this has been the fact that I haven’t done much research into what sounds Icthyosaurs could plausibly have made and not knowing what to color the Stenopterygius and Temnodontosaurus. I was able to find that the Stenop was a blubbery blackish color, but hadn’t found anything for the ..read more
