Salt Lake City, UT – In a video posted to social media this afternoon, Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes announced he will not run for reelection next year.  Alliance for a Better Utah issued the following statement in response:  “During his time in office, Sean Reyes has continued to tarnish the image of the Utah Attorney General’s Office. Upon his appointment, Utahns received an extreme politician focused more on scoring partisan points as a member of the Republican Attorney Generals Association and being a toady for MAGA Donald Trump and disgraced Tim Ballard. Efforts to sow distrust in elections continue in Utah

For the past month and a half, an old fashioned roadshow has been taking place in counties across our state. While that may recall images of traveling salesmen or theater troupes, this roadshow was more of a mix between a bad circus and an evangelical huckster. And the man who swept through town? He spread only one thing: distrust in our election system Last month, we were alerted to an email that went out to all the GOP delegates and alternates in Summit County, inviting them to an event to be held in Park City on October 16 featuring the “Hand Count Road Show.” Two members of the Summit Coun ..read more

Utahns deserve to have a voice in redistricting process
Better Utah Blog

It’s with a shared sense of conviction that I hear Utahns, including myself, contend that our state is turning purple with each election. A pat on the back, a smile exchanged as we assure ourselves our state is one shifting in the favor of progress, one that is learning to reflect the interests and politics of its adapting population. That is, until we account for partisan gerrymandering. Utah’s struggle with redistricting is an enduring ordeal, one marked in allegations of extreme manipulation, the misuse of legislative government, and a lack of transparency on part of lawmakers. The oral arg ..read more

Lawmakers must do more to prevent gun violence
Better Utah Blog

Firearms are the leading cause of death among children and teens in Utah. This disturbing fact underscores the need for more effective gun control laws in our state. However, due to a twisted interpretation of the Second Amendment, our state lawmakers refuse to act on gun violence prevention. Instead of continuing to move in the wrong direction, our state leaders should implement effective gun control measures that protect innocent lives. The Second Amendment reads, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall ..read more

Utah’s cannabis laws are failing us

Did you know Utah is one of only 18 states that still punishes individuals for non-violent cannabis possession? Under current Utah law, possession of as little as an ounce or less of cannabis can result in up to a thousand dollars in fines and a six-month jail sentence. These penalties exist even after the creation of the Utah Medical Cannabis Program and recent steps to decriminalize cannabis on the federal level. Just last week, President Joe Biden issued pardons for those with federal charges of simple cannabis possession, directed the Attorney General and Human Services Secretary to review ..read more

Mike Lee has been a United States senator for 12 years. So we decided to look into his record according to some of our core principles and let you know why we are #HumansAgainstMikeLee. Strong Communities Mike Lee is against affordable healthcare. The most vivid example of Mike Lee’s fight against affordable healthcare is his long term crusade against the Affordable Care Act, which aimed to make healthcare more accessible to a wider swath of low-income Americans. He went so far in this fight to “defund” the ACA that he was responsible (along with Texas Senator Ted Cruz) for the 16-day governme ..read more

Debunking misinformation
Better Utah Blog

In 2020, AZ Congressman Paul Gosar tweeted an image that appeared to show former President Barack Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani shaking hands. Reporters quickly debunked the photo as an altered fake of a real photo between Obama and former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. But the fake was shared thousands of times. As elections loom, it’s crucial to know how to spot fake news so that you are not manipulated and don’t spread false stories. Misinformation is intentional use of false information to affect the participation of voters in elections and to harm a person, group ..read more

A few weeks ago, I joined the rest of my family for a summer vacation in rural Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming. We spent half of the week cooped up in our cabin due to a never-ending series of thunderstorms, reading on the porch while cuddled in a blanket or sitting around the table playing card games. But for most of the week, we were able to explore and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounded us in every direction.  For the first time in my life, I visited Yellowstone National Park. The park rangers gave my family a surprise when they waved us through the entrance without paying the entranc ..read more

Reproductive Freedom is Religious Freedom. Here’s Why.

As a Jew in the United States, I’m pretty used to accommodating other people’s religious beliefs over my own. I have attended school during Jewish holidays, gone on family vacations during the available Christmas breaks despite not celebrating Christmas, and attended community events at my school that were pretty influenced by Christian tradition. Generally, none of this infringes on my religious freedom. People understand when I need to attend synagogue for holidays or need dietary accommodations such as not eating pork. Despite my minority status as a Jew, I manage to find harmony with the c ..read more
