A Kite-Shaped Book, Two Ways
Byopia Press

Today’s Byopia Press project is a little modular accordion based on the shape of a kite. To make the book, you will need to print three files: the body units, the connectors, and the text units. There is also a pdf with templates. You can just look at this on screen if you need a guide to which pieces go where and where the scoring/folding lines go on the first and last body units. (These have no scoring lines as they would show when folded.) If you would like to practice scoring and folding and putting the units together, you can print it out. You could also use the templates to cut out ..read more

From the text on Vimeo: This short documentary was filmed in the summer of 2018 and follows the process of Charlotte, NC based artist Elizabeth Palmisano as she experiments with a new body of work involving mixed media fiber arts and handmade paper. “This emerging body of work represents the transformative push brought on by adversity and the beauty that can come from humble, resourceful means. The work begins with upcycling everyday fibers such as paper towels, napkins, as well as scrap threads and transforming them into delicate, beautiful pieces of handmade paper. Once the paper is create ..read more

Two Paperfold Kites

This is the final installment of my series on simple paper kites. Next week’s post will feature a DIY artist’s book — kite-related. The first kite today is a keeled diamond. The plans for today’s kites come from a book we have. I cannot tell you its name or author as it was a library discard and is missing the title page and publishing information. It was published after 1975, since the most recent date in the bibliography at the back is that year. The pages are brightly coloured with white illustrations. An image search on Google produced nothing that matched, so no one has scanned and uploa ..read more

Another Kite, Two (or more) Ways

This week’s post features a simple paper kite designed by William Schaeffer. I found instructions (of varying quality) in several places on the internet and made my kite from a plan that has the points coming together two inches from the tip and the line attachment four inches from the tip. Then I found an excellent explanation of how to make this kite from littlekites.com. The gif shows the steps in making the kite. Here’s their diagram with measurements, with the points coming together in a slightly different location. Like all the kites in this series, Schaeffer’s kite is designed to be ..read more

Three Kites

March, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, is the month most often associated with wind and therefore kite flying. I thought I would feature some paper kites this month. The simplest paper kite is the Sled. This is based on the Sled Kite designed by Frank H. Scott in the early 1960s. To make a Sled, take a piece of copier paper and mark the middle point on the long side, then fold the ends into the middle. Fold the upper corners out and down to match the side folds. Trim off the triangles created by the folds Trim off another triangle on each side, cutting from the tip of the first triang ..read more

A Little Progress

I did more papier-mâché experimenting this past week as well as coming up with new forms. The test piece on the right went a little wobbly along two edges of the opening. The grain-long sides were fine, so I think the problem could be corrected by adding a second layer of card inside the form with the grain running in the other direction. I also did a bit of play with wire. The blue paper wasn’t really suitable for a base as it bent and creased too easily. I continued work on the February #guylainelab project. Here is the second side of the meander book completed to today. Only four days lef ..read more
