The 2023 ride is in the books as they say. I continue to use both this and the Tour de Whatcom as fun measures of my fitness. That may not be an all encompassing metric, but I figure I’ve got to be at least somewhat fit to finish either ride. If I finish with a ..read more

This morning I had four vintage Raleighs, but when I saw an ad for Raleigh bike with fender and pump…well I looked and I saw the worn “LEN.. ON” decal, then I went and bought my fifth vintage Raleigh. Oh, and it is my size. It doesn’t look or feel like anything has been asked ..read more

Previously, I had an Old Issue with this old bike.I never have liked the idea of bikes as wall hangers or garden features. Maybe for bikes that just are no longer safe to ride; they can be put out in the pasture so to speak. So I was really torn when I broke the granny ..read more

My wife had a Facebook memory pop up from my first Tour de Whatcom(TDW) century ride in 2015, making this my ninth ride around the county. We had the Covid year but I did my private “outlaw” version. Then I had the year where it overlapped oral surgery so I did the 40 mile route ..read more

You may find that things on this site are empty or misplaced. I am in the process of moving away from Godaddy as a hosting service. I found them to be expensive, especially for all the problems with keeping behind the scene things up to date and how sketchy it was uploading media. Overall it ..read more

So this story goes that sometime way back in the early 90’s, this guy who had done a lot of road riding in his life decided, that he, with a couple of his friends, should try this new craze called mountain biking.  That guy was me and I was dirt poor, but I knew enough about bikes to know that I had to go to a real bike shop.  I can’t remember all the details but I am pretty sure this Specialized Hardrock was purchased at Gregg’s Bicycle store in Bellevue, WA.  I couldn’t afford a Stumpjumper, nor apparently a better color scheme. I rode the crap out of this bike, replacing thin ..read more

Tour de Whatcom 2022

I am glad that 2022 was a pretty much normal year for Tour de Whatcom(TDW) and by that I mean no Covid like 2020 where I did all of the rides as solo/outlaw rides and no oral surgery restrictions like 2021 where I did just the 40 mile route.  Oh yeah, there was the issue with the crappy spring weather that slowed down road training, and then the wonderful eye work being done at PCLI that had me doing no training in late June/early July.  So, there I was 2 weeks before the event and I hadn’t ridden any rides longer than 20 miles this year.  I seriously contemplated pulling out, o ..read more

Can’t Help Myself

When I see bikes like this for sale I really can’t help myself.  I think that the affliction is a combination of factors, in this case the bike: is from my era, is all stock, is $50, and in my opinion needs to be saved from the dump?   To be clear, that list was likely all rationalizations.  Rationalization or not, this completely stock 1987 Schwinn Sierra was billed as a cute, sturdy bike that want’s some TLC and for $50 no haggling dollars it is the next bike on my list. I remember a friend of mine, back perhaps even in 1987, poo poo-ing the whole Schwinn off-road line at the ..read more
