There are several different perspectives to the concept of aging in place that are now undergoing changes. Post or rather mid the Corona Virus pandemic, senior living communities are trying to reinvent themselves as a better solution to those struggling with the isolation of continuous quarantine.  On the other hand government is in major flux as to what can be accomplished to hold safety net programs steady and offer more viable at home solutions.  Seniors are being pushed into Medicare Advantage coverage that is promising all sorts of ancillary services that may not really material ..read more

Expanding CAPABLE for more seniors

Those who follow this blog know that I have been praising the home assessment and improvement program CAPABLE, initiated at John Hopkins for several years. CAPABLE is the acronym that explains the program’s purpose, Community Aging in Place – Advancing Better Living for Seniors. It has grown to be utilized in 30 cities as a way of using the services of a nurse, occupational therapist and a handyman to “fix” the homes of low income seniors to make living in their homes safer. The big verdict is that  it saves money in government terms. A small investment from $500 to $3000 per home can sav ..read more

A Look at the Numbers – Confidence Crash for Aging in Place

No, I am not talking about the distressing number of rising covid cases.  Maybe it is because of the pandemic that  fewer seniors now see themselves as being able to successfully age in place. On the front side a disproportionate numbers of retirees surveyed hope to stay in their own homes and committees.   That number has always been in the high 80 to 90 percent range. A recent survey taken after the start of our national pandemic now says the  number of seniors who think they can actually accomplish staying in their own homes is down to only 33%!  That number ha ..read more

I have been gathering all manner of articles on how the pandemic will impact the future of aging or how will it re-invent the senior housing industry.  It has forced me to rethink my introduction to my course on Staying Independent in  Your Home that I will teach either online or in person this fall. There is the very big picture, will retirees no longer want to downsize to that nice little apartment in town so they can walk to  restaurants and entertainment.  Despite the flurry of advertising by different senior living communities that pledge to keep you safe – trust has g ..read more

I have been striving to find some positive notes amidst the biggest threat to the senior population to come along in a 100 years.  There is gloom and doom of course and then there is hope.  I alternate between the opening scene in the movie Amadeus where Mozart is dumped in a mass grave and visions of the US going where other nations have gone in combining public private ventures to provide better options for seniors to live a healthy happy retirement. In a recent blog post, called Pandemic to Portal,  the author stated the opinion that it takes massive changes to build a gatewa ..read more

We are now in a post viral pandemic world where the oldest citizens are the most vulnerable.  Besides the obvious and ominous medical consequences, adding social distancing for those who are already isolated is heart breaking.  Those who are not web savvy and reluctant to use delivery services will be hurt the most.  No matter how many goodwill check in calls are made by volunteers and non profits, we have to embolden our older citizens with what I call the simple tele-luxuries to connect with the rest of the world. I will just stop here and copy most of a recent article on what one young woma ..read more

Blue plate special for assisted living

One of the most significant developments in the last year regarding senior housing has been the look towards a middle, more affordable option.  The national average cost for assisted living is still in the $4000 a month range, a price tag out of the reach for many seniors.  Besides not wanting to go to a group setting, the sheer cost burden is insurmountable.  As many senior living communities and investors face 88% occupancy rates and failing profits, they finally had a light bulb go off that they have over customized to attract those who can afford rates as high as 10,000 a month! So now the ..read more

It has been a while since my last blog.  It is not a lack of subjects, more trying to sort through all the  the new press on an old subject – getting old.  Over the last five years, I have been amused by the original titles for approaching aging as a subject.  Authors and organizations have been formed with the phrases such as: re-imaginging aging, re-framing aging, challenging aging, and defying aging. There is new book out titled, Successful Aging by Daniel Levitin. It puts forth detailed advice on keeping your mental sharpness and gets down in the neuroscience to explain the complexities of ..read more

I am going to try and start the year out optimistically as we enter the roaring twenties.  Maybe more than incremental change is possible in a good way even as we face world chaos at large. The aging population numbers are adding up and getting more than backhand attention in some states. The older population of Minnesota has hit one million and will outpace this year  the head count of those under the age of 18. Plus Minnesota can boast it has one of the best longevity stats in the nation. So they are in in for the long haul out there in the ice and snow. So what does that add up to; a procla ..read more

2019 has been a very significant year for bringing aging in in place issues more out in the open. Articles on senior housing, financial challenges and on the aging process itself  are still not front page news.  But they are not back page either. Much of the discussion is generated regarding following the money.  The money that private industry thinks boomers have to spend is an incentive to build senior housing and create more silver tech.  The reality that there needs to be a middle income alternatives  is now obvious. The resources of public money to allocate or legislate for coming needs i ..read more
