During one of the last days of spring training on a cool, windy morning in Mesa, Ariz., Chicago Cubs infielders Christopher Morel and Nick Madrigal positioned themselves at third base.
Major-league coach Jonathan Mota situated in shallow left-center field with a fungo and bag of baseballs. The drill was designed for Morel and Madrigal to work on their reactions and scoop the skipping ball cleanly while putting down a tag to the base, something that will require more precision with the new obstruction rule this season.

BOSTON — San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher knows what awaits him. Late Sunday, moments after his Aztecs punched their ticket to Boston for the Sweet 16, he was asked for his early thoughts on facing UConn, and he cut to the chase.
“Well, it’s the UConn Invitational,” Dutcher said on the TBS broadcast. “So we’re going to Boston, see if we can disrupt the party a little bit.”
That’s certainly a tall order this week as the NCAA Tournament’s East Region comes to TD Garden, where UConn, San Diego State, Iowa State and Illinois will battle for a spot in the Final Four.

The barrage of celebrity documentaries that have arrived in the wake of (and seemingly inspired by the success of) 2020’s “The Last Dance” tend to be exercises in image management. Unlike the dishier genre of celebrity memoir, these are scrapbooks for the screen. “STEVE! (martin) a documentary in 2 pieces” on Apple TV+ avoids some of those pitfalls better than most.
Not entirely. Director Morgan Neville dutifully films Martin and collaborator Harry Bliss as they work on a 2022 memoir that tells the story of Martin’s career through cartoon anecdotes, and these moments serve no other purpose tha ..read more

On a recent weekday, short but mighty flames began consuming an expanse of tallgrass in Nachusa Grasslands, their advance marked with crackles and pops.
Satisfied with the blaze, a group of eight conservation workers split in two, walking the perimeter of a 124-acre square expanse of land. They used liquid fuel, drop by drop, to create a ring of fire and rubber tools to put out unruly sparks.
Everything was under control.
The neon orange fire charred most of what it encountered: native plants such as Canada wild rye, big bluestem and Indiangrass; and invasive species like bush honeysuckle and ..read more

Dear Amy: My two sons are not speaking to one another, after a fight that occurred during Christmas two years ago.
The result is that my granddaughters don’t like their uncle and aunt. The three girls are 11, 9, and 6.
While sleeping overnight at my house last weekend, I told my granddaughters that I love both of my sons equally. They started to cry.
The next day I met with their parents in a coffee shop and apologized.
I explained that I didn’t mean to offend anyone and asked for forgiveness.
I thought that they had forgiven me until recently when my son said that the oldest daughter (in fift ..read more

If the Chicago Bulls hope to stay competitive, they need the best version of Coby White.
With nine games left in the season, it’s not clear when — or if — White will be back to himself. But that’s not slowing the guard as he aims to help the Bulls into the postseason.
White had another off0shooting night Wednesday in a 125-99 blowout of the Indiana Pacers at the United Center. He opened the game shooting 0-for-6 from the field, including one missed 3-point attempt, before snapping the streak with a transition pullup from the top of the arc in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
