Sunrooms and Schnitzel: Finding a House in Germany
All About Fabric!

It's almost time for me to leave Fabric Farms Interiors. The house here is packed up and sold and our few household items are winging their way across the ocean as I write. On the bright side, here are pictures of the house we found, beating out at least 5 other house seekers. Finding a house or an apartment in Munich is definitely an endurance race, with a large dollop of luck on the side. We managed to snag a duplex with a garage! Here's a picture of the back. We have a tiny garden, with an even tinier patio. One of the most exciting things for our family of 4 is that we have 2.5 baths ..read more

With my personal move to Germany looming, I've been looking at home decor trends, both in the US and in Europe. Light and airy with white walls and parquet floors throughout seems to be the rule of thumb in the nicest Munich rental properties; my husband and I were surprised to see quite a few spacious homes as well. In fact, the house we hope to rent is bigger than our house here! If we get it - every apartment and house in Munich seems to have at least 20+ applicants. We've heard horror stories. A one bedroom apartment besieged by 500 applicants in one day. One couple searched for 8 months b ..read more

The Bedroom Conundrum: When Standard, Isn't

For those of you coming late to the this Blog, although Fabric Farms Interiors will still be here in Hilliard, I am moving to Munich, Germany this summer. This has created a number of challenges, one of which has been the dreaded DOWNSIZING, deciding what stays and what goes. Downsizing has been a difficult - and surprisingly emotional - experience. Last time I talked about my thrift shop score of 2 small armchairs that are coming with us. (Once Bernie has finished reupholstering them!) Rounding out the items coming from the living room/family room/dining room, I'll be bringing a 42" pedestal ..read more

With my husband 4,400 miles away, I had imagined that I would have full autonomy regarding home decor in our tiny flat-to-come. After all, I'm here on the ground, sorting through our belongings and making decisions about what stays and what goes. What's gone already? The kitchen aid mixer...and all the memories of Christmas cookie baking with the kids. The heavy wooden sideboard that I refinished when I was pregnant with my daughter 20 years ago. Bookcases, pink plastic dressers, train sets, buffet tables. Gone. The house does look bigger now that it is practically empty. But it's hard, I'm n ..read more

"We're moving to Munich, Germany" It's the kind of announcement that is followed by stunned silence, and that was certainly the case in my house about 4 weeks ago. Although my husband had been interviewing with a German company, I didn't really imagine that he'd take the job. It was too far, too different, too German. Our son is a freshman in high school and doesn't speak German. Surely no job could be worth that far of a move. Fast forward to today. My husband starts his new job on February 1st and my son and I will be selling the house, finishing up the school year, and then heading over ..read more

Leather: Yes? No? Absolutely!

Leather...there are few upholstery materials as evocative as leather. Maybe someone in your family had a huge, tufted desk chair, the leather cracked and worn but so soft. Or maybe your first big purchase was a leather sofa; you loved it so much...until your puppy found it and chewed the cushions. Love it or hate it, leather is one of the most popular and enduring upholstery materials. Today's vinyls and recycled (or bonded) leathers are closer than ever to the real thing: they have the look of leather, are extremely durable, and are easy to work with. But, if you want that leathe ..read more

Cracking the Fabric Code

Cue the 007 music! I always feel like I'm cracking some weird secret code when I look at fabric tags. Some are more cryptic than others. But generally they have the same information: Who made the fabric and how do I get it? What is the fabric made out of? How wide is the fabric? Where was it made? How big is the pattern repeat? Does it have a protective coating or treatment? How durable is it? How can I clean it? (Commercial Upholstery) Is the fabric suitable for commercial applications? Does it meet fire code or other required regulations? Example 1a Example 1b So ..read more

Determining which fabrics are suitable for upholstery is more an art than a science... Yummy Fabrics! But which ones are good for upholstery?!? ...but there are certain guidelines to make it easier to choose an appropriate fabric! There are four main factors to take into consideration WEIGHT Most upholstery fabrics are heavier weight and opaque. If you can see through it, keep looking! DRAPE A super drape-y, soft fabric will sometimes have trouble holding a crisp edge. Some drape is good and can make upholstery easier; too much is...not. Calculating Yardage for Dining Room Chairs - Updated!
All About Fabric!

So back in 2008, we posted a short blog entitled "Calculating yardage for dining room chairs." It's time to revisit this popular topic! First off, we have a video walking you through the process of figuring out what yardage you'll need - whether you have a plain fabric or a patterned one. The basics haven't changed: Many people have dining room chairs that have seats that "slip" out or "drop in" (unscrew from the chair frame). These chair seats can be easily recovered with new fabric. As a general rule, using 54" wide fabric, 3/4 yard will work for 2 chairs. Three-quarters yard ..read more
