Numerous high-rise towers are being planned along King George Boulevard in Surrey, but the latest is away from the fray around Surrey Central Station and King George Station. The proposal being made by Kelowna-based Appelt Properties is for 13585 95 Avenue, about a five-minute drive south from King George Station. Directly to the south of the site is Queen Elizabeth Secondary School and directly to the east is Surrey Memorial Hospital. The site is currently a vacant piece of land, which BC Assessment values at $30,498,000. Appelt Properties owns the site under Centurion Appelt (9525 King Geo ..read more

Canadian renters aren’t blown away by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent announcements designed (in theory, at least) to empower and protect the country’s tenants. As part of the federal government’s recently-released Budget 2024 – one that’s jam-packed with measures aimed to tackle the country’s housing affordability crisis – Trudeau introduced new protections for renters. As it turns out, however, many are in the dark. And those who've seen the light aren’t exactly thrilled by its glow. According to a survey of 437 Canadian renters conducted by Rentals.ca, 66% of respondents stated the ..read more

You may not think of sunshine and rainbows when you think of Toronto’s Jane and Finch, but the North York neighbourhood has begun to shed its nefarious reputation in recent years. And with the Finch West LRT on the way, developers are zeroing in on the area in the hopes of bringing more housing and much more density to what is really a potential-packed pocket of the city. Stanford Homes is among the developers that have set its sights on the area, according to a proposal that hit the city’s desk in the last few breaths of April. Stanford’s hope is to bring a 29-storey infill building to 2775 ..read more

Well, you can’t say they weren’t warned. Like a fed-up parent, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet is bypassing Doug Ford’s government and sending housing funding straight to Ontario municipalities. According to a letter from federal housing minister Sean Fraser sent to Ontario Housing Minister Paul Calandra and obtained by STOREYS, the federal government will now send $357 million in affordable housing funding directly to municipalities rather than to the province after Ford’s government failed to demonstrate how it would meet its target of 19,660 affordable new homes by 2028. The move ..read more

After being placed under receivership in December and securing a stalking horse bid to buy the property in January, the sale of the planned Garibaldi At Squamish ski resort was set to be approved in March, before the Province made a last-minute objection to the sale that delayed the approval. The sale has since been approved, on May 3, according to filings in the Supreme Court. The Garibaldi At Squamish project was being undertaken by Vancouver-based developers Aquilini Development and Northland Properties. Opposition to the various pieces of new legislation the provincial government introduced last fall is continuing to sprout up across British Columbia, but the opposition coming from Burnaby is a bit different. While most of other opposition is generally coming from cities and neighbourhoods that are "behind" where the Province wants things to be, the City of Burnaby believes that it is well ahead, specifically on the transit-oriented development front. "In my mind, Brentwood and a couple of other areas in our city have done more than enough," said Mayor Mike Hurley during last week's council ..read more

Last March, the provincial government gave the Ontario construction industry something to talk about – an overdue dialogue, frankly – when it announced that it would introduce women-only bathrooms on construction sites. Taking it a step further, a day on the job could soon get a little easier for women. As part of a bill introduced today, the Ontario government announced that menstrual products would be required to be provided on the province’s larger construction sites. The changes are said to apply to construction sites of 20 or more workers and where construction is anticipated to last at ..read more
