Bet you didn’t know that when German-American architect Mies Van Der Rohe famously said “Less is more,” he was talking about the roof of your house. Van Der Rohe was a pioneering voice in Modernist design and architecture, which we know and love today thanks to the resurgence of Midcentury Modern design encapsulated in TV shows like “Mad Men” and championed by mainstream retailers like West Elm. The style as Van Der Rohe helped define it emphasized minimalism and functionality in every aspect of a building’s design—from the layout to the eventual furniture inside. The flat roof was a hallmark ..read more

When most people set out to build a home, the options often seem split into two camps: find an architect and embark on the long and costly journey of designing and building from scratch, or opt for a prefabricated home from a limited portfolio of existing designs. But for Jennifer and Pascal Smith Couti, the new owners of Atlantic Custom Homes in Ossining, the middle ground is where the magic happens. As Hudson Valley and Connecticut’s independent dealership for Lindal Cedar Homes, a company with 75 years’ experience in the building industry, Atlantic Custom Homes provides full-service de ..read more

Is a ‘Kit’ Home Pre-Fab?

by lindalny2015

The term Pre-Fab is a catchall for all systems-built houses that are manufactured to some degree in a factory, and includes kit homes, panelized homes, and modular homes.  Lindal’s pre-engineered Post & Beam homes are essentially “Kit” homes where Lindal provides all the materials for the structure to be assembled by a local contractor, not built in a factory and shipped complete or in large sections.  The advantages of a Lindal home over a Pre-Fab or modular home are many.  To start with, we – as the local Lindal Dealer – visit the site to evaluate the best design to take a ..read more

A classic view of the Catskill Mountains – as revered by Frederick Church and the Hudson River School of painters – is seen through sliding walls of glass in this example of the partnership between Dowling Studios and Lindal Cedar Homes. The design was adapted from a prior home by Leslie Dowling, to reduce its size and maximize windows and doors for the dramatic view. It features 3-4 bedrooms, a large open kitchen/dining/living area, and a large cantilevered, beamed overhang with firepit and hot tub, so that the outdoor area can be enjoyed year round. The owners chose dark stained clear Wester ..read more

OK, So What Does It Cost?

When I am shopping for a product or reading about it, my first question is the cost. When building and finishing a custom home, that should be your first question, since the entire project will depend on your budget. We believe we serve three clients: you, your site, and your budget. There is a short cost answer and a long one. First of all, while we can predict what it will cost to build, equip and finish any of our Lindal Cedar Homes, we don’t know what you will be paying for the land, and we can’t estimate site work costs (excavating, driveway, septic, well) until we know the property. A Systems Approach to Building Your Modern Home – Frank Lloyd Wright’s Idea, or Sears?
Hudson Valley Cedar Homes Blog
by lindalny2015

When he founded Lindal Cedar Homes in 1945, Sir Walter Lindal offered “kit” homes that customers selected from a catalogue, and which included all the plans and materials for assembly by local contractors. Everything for the structure was figured out and delivered to the house site. This concept had been done successfully by companies like Sears Roebuck as early as 1908, but not many people know that Frank Lloyd Wright carried it further to modern homes one hundred years ago with his 1917 creation American System-Built Homes, see https://www.curbed.com/2016/12/16/13984492/frank-lloyd-wright-pr ..read more
