Yankees 5, Tigers 3: That could’ve gone a little better

Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports A three-run dinger sealed the Tigers’ fate early, and the home plate umpire certainly wasn’t on his game either. After Friday night’s offense-less debacle of a walk-off loss, Saturday afternoon brought some early fireworks, some horrific and impactful ball-and-strike calls, and a 5-3 Tiger defeat. Alabama’s own Casey Mize made his sixth start for the Tigers. He’s been solid this year so far, coming off injury, with a typical outing seeing him pitch five or six innings and give up a pair of runs or so. He’s been generally good with the walks; regaining one’s comman ..read more

Yankees 2, Tigers 1: Tigers squander too many chances and get walked off

Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Reese Olson and bullpen pitched well, but they wasted multiple chances with the bases loaded earlier in the game and it cost them. That was a frustrating loss, but one you could feel brewing as the Tigers went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position, failing to score with the bases loaded twice. Jason Foley continued to struggle, and the Yankees walked this one off in the bottom of the ninth. Reese Olson was really good once again, and has inherited the “good starter who gets no run support” mantle so far this season. The young right-hander is on a roll, and ..read more

How many MLB rotations could Matt Manning crack today?

Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK Once a top-ten pick and prospect, Manning has only seen double-header action for Detroit thus far in 2024. Battles for the fifth and final spot in the Detroit Tigers starting rotation are an annual staple of spring training down at Joker Marchant Stadium. This year’s competition, however, sticks out from years past, both for the depth of talent and the fact that it essentially ended in a stalemate. While it became clear early on that the Tigers would slot in ace Tarik Skubal and veteran free-agent signings Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda into the team’s rotation, th ..read more

Photo by Eakin Howard/Getty Images Recent mock drafts have favored outfielder Vance Honeycutt and pitcher Trey Yesavage for the Tigers’ first round pick. The month of May marks roughly the halfway point in the 2024 draft cycle, which has about two and a half months left. The Detroit Tigers were awarded the eleventh pick in this year’s MLB Draft lottery, which is a pretty good place to be picking in the upcoming class. There’s a massive amount of college talent projected to be picked in the top half of this year’s first round, with the second tier of prospects ending near Detroit’s pick. They’l ..read more

Scores, news, and notes, from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Thursday, May 2, 2024. Toledo Mud Hens 7, Columbus Clippers 3 (box) After losing the first two games of the series, the Mud Hens came back strong in this one. They pounded out 12 hits and drew six walks, building a big lead early and watching a good night from the bullpen lock down the victory. Again it was Akil Baddoo leading the way. The center fielder led off the game with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly to get Toledo a 1-0 lead from the jump. They started to break the game open in the second inning as Ryan Vil ..read more

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers farm system for Wednesday, May 1, 2024. Columbus Clippers 14, Toledo Mud Hens 8 (box) A rough Triple-A debut was too much for a pair of Akil Baddoo homers and a good day for the offense overall to overcome. The Hens came right out and provided their young starting pitcher a nice lead to work with. Akil Baddoo crushed the second pitch of the game to straightaway center for his third round tripper of the season. But the Hens were just getting loosened up. Justyn-Henry Malloy followed with a single and stole second as Jace Jung struck out. K ..read more

Tigers 4, Cardinals 1: A strong outing Maeda the Tigers’ day

Photo by Duane Burleson/Getty Images The Tigers made off with the series thanks to Matt Vierling and Kenta Maeda. After splitting the double header on Tuesday, the Tigers were looking to walk away with a series win against the St. Louis Cardinals on a gorgeous Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park. Kenta Maed, who has struggled mightily in the first month of the season, was looking to start a redemption arc in May, going up against Miles Mikolas for the Cardinals. The Cardinals went 1-2-3 to start the first, something Maeda certainly appreciated. Riley Greene kicked off the bottom of the inning ..read more
