My story

I'm in my 40s and I'm honestly just now really starting to come to terms with the damage done to me by the SDA church and environment (which I personally consider a cult based on my own experience). I'm not going to trauma dump, but I just feel the need to share my and my family's history with the SDA church. long before I was born, my dad was a hell-raiser in the best way. he was being tear-gassed at civil rights marches, burning his draft card on the steps of the state capitol building, and living the whole sex drugs and rock and roll lifestyle playing guitar in rock bands. at some point he ..read more

Please help. My husband of almost 30 years became an Adventist, and I think it might be the end of our marriage.

I’ll try to make the story short. A couple of years ago, my husband started going to an Adventist church. I wasn’t familiar with all their doctrine. I thought the main difference was that they went to church on Saturday instead of Sundays. After doing some research, I realized the incredible amount of stupidity, fear, and legalism of their beliefs, but I was hoping he would realize that and get out soon. However, as time passed, he became more and more religious and involved in their beliefs, didn’t want to lift a finger on Saturdays, didn’t want to watch our regular shows, and a bunch of bal ..read more

Books about cults - recommendations

Hi, everybody! So I'm writing a paper about conditioning, and idk if it's because of my own experience as ex-sda, but I'm compelled to include something about cults and how conditioning works in that specific setting, so as to compare with other materials I've been analyzing. Anyway, since a lot of people here have probably come across some material regarding that subject, I was wondering if you could recommend or point me out to some books or articles that talk about cult mentality and the processes used to condition their members. Thanks in advance :) submitted by /u/redflamel [visit reddi ..read more

Here’s your weekly dose of little light hypocrisy. Magical time travel is only bad if they’re not doing it; some yt dudes are pretending to be island devil worshippers and the acting is Oscar-worthy. It’s actually kind of funny ? submitted by /u/auasgirl [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I hope I am doing this right. This is my first time starting the thread. Today I celebrate, doing whatever I please! I watched "The Big Bang Theory", and "New Girl", and I washed dishes. How are all of you celebrating this non-sacred Saturday? https://preview.redd.it/nzl6b0bq9ayc1.jpg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=10e846e28e88be36f696c3629f876efc7978dbcc submitted by /u/Old_Cookie_6513 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Sometimes I feel I won't ever get over religious trauma.

Most of the time the trauma of being SDA for 23ish years runs in the back ground. I don't think about it too much, but lately it's been consuming me. It touches every aspect of my life. Like many of us I didn't get a normal childhood, I didn't often get to watch the same movies or do the same activities as my peers, especially if it was on a Saturday or Friday evening. I grew up feeling like I was being watched constantly, and that the end times was upon us at any moment. I feel like I complain too much, but it really deeply bothers me. I'm seeing a therapist for the first time in a few years ..read more

Tips for surviving an Adventist college graduation

Hey y'all, I'm about to receive my bachelor's next weekend and do plan on walking, but of course, when it involves a HBCU and an organized religion, I'm bound to be there for all eternity until I actually receive my diploma. So, I need tips for surviving a long graduation since my institution wants to make it a 2-day event (Fri & Sat) for the consecration, baccalaureate, and commencement. TLDR: I'm ready to get my college degree and get the hell outta there, but first I need to survive the actual ceremony and get through all that Jesus babble. submitted by /u/Character-Platform-7 [visit ..read more

Church Architecture

So, I love architecture and marvel at the great cathedrals of Europe. I have never seen an esthetically pleasing Adventist church building. Most are either butt ugly (look up Pasadena SDA Church in Pasadena, MD) or just okay. Anybody know of one that is not ugly or boring? I know it's all conjecture. submitted by /u/PrincessWolfie1331 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
