Elon Musk Enlists State Allies to Silence Critics

I wrote last November (FAIR.org, 11/22/23) about how Twitter owner Elon Musk’s lawsuit against Media Matters—alleging the group’s research “manipulated” data in an effort to “destroy” Musk’s social media platform—was an episode of a right-wing corporate media mogul using his wealth to crush free speech. Now Musk’s friends in government are joining his efforts to silence his critics. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is suing Media Matters to demand internal documents, because he, like Musk, believes the group “manipulated Twitter‘s algorithm to create a report showing ..read more

Biden Has the Power to Stop Netanyahu
Truthdig

Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza. The resolution passed with 14 votes in favor; the United States abstained. Israel immediately criticized the United States for allowing the resolution to pass. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the U.S. abstention “harms the war effort as well as the effort to liberate the hostages.” Then, in a direct public rebuke to President Biden, Netanyahu scrapped the high-level talks in Washington on Israel’s planned attack on Rafah that Biden had requested. Biden has warned ..read more

Florida Is Stripping Climate Change From Most of Its Laws

In Florida, the effects of climate change are hard to ignore, no matter your politics. It’s the hottest state — Miami spent a record 46 days above a heat index of 100 degrees last summer — and many homes and businesses are clustered along beachfront areas threatened by rising seas and hurricanes. The Republican-led legislature has responded with more than $640 million for resilience projects to adapt to coastal threats.  But the same politicians don’t seem ready to acknowledge the root cause of these problems. A bill awaiting signature from Governor ..read more

Assange Sent to ‘Purgatory’ by British High Court

Related What’s Next for Julian Assange In a split decision, the British High Court on Tuesday, ruled that Julian Assange may be extradited to stand trial in the United States on charges he violated the Espionage Act of 1917 if the United States government gives certain “satisfactory assurances” to protect his rights to freedom of expression and that he will not face the death penalty if convicted. But the ruling raises serious legal questions in a case that has been unprecedented from the outset.  The High Court has given the United States three weeks to give “satisfactory assurances” th ..read more

NEW YORK | 24 March 2024 (IDN) — A new UN report has warned of an emerging ‘democracy paradox,’ aggravating inequality, substantial economic concentration in the hands of the rich few, coupled with protectionism taking the upper hand over multilateralism, and rampant political polarization Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarized world, released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), unveils a troubling trend: the rebound in the global Human Development Index (HDI)—a summary measure reflecting a country’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, education, and ..read more

For girls like me who came of age in the ‘80s while the backlash to the women’s liberation movement raged, it was a profoundly confusing time. On one hand, we grew up listening to “Free to Be … You and Me” combat harmful sexist stereotypes, but the decade was also marked by stifling pressures to conform to traditional roles. We were told that we could have high-powered jobs outside the home and raise children — cloyingly known as “having it all” — but we’d probably be miserable and the kids would suffer. (Men, on the other hand, continued to experience no such dilemma). That was the ..read more

by PD Staff / Peoples Dispatch

On March 25, the UN Security Council finally passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, to be implemented during the month of Ramadan and to end on April 9. The UNSC was able to pass the resolution because the United States did not exercise its veto power as it did on three other occasions, instead, it abstained. 14 out of 15 members of the UNSC voted in favor of the resolution, which was introduced by Mozambique. Russia attempted but failed to include an amendment which stipulated that the ceasefire must be “permanent.” The vote took place hours after Israeli Defense Minister Y ..read more

The Democrats’ Playbook Is Failing—Will They Pivot in Time for November?

While calling this year’s presidential election against Der Fuhrer Donald Trump the most critical ever, the Democratic Party is using the same old playbook for this year’s campaigns. The same old obsession with raising record amounts of money at the expense of presenting an authentic, vibrant agenda that will motivate millions of voters to vote for Democratic candidates. The same old corporate-conflicted political and media consultants are controlling what the candidates say and do so as not to upset the monied interests and the lucrative consulting business for corporate clients. We will see ..read more

Moscow Attack Underscores Misguided Priorities of Both Russia and US

The Islamic State terrorist attack in Moscow is the starkest possible reminder that despite the war in Ukraine, Russia and the West also still have some of the same enemies. What the terrorists — ISIS-K an Afghanistan offshoot of IS took responsibility — did in Moscow, they have done in Paris and Manchester — and will do (and did do, on 9/11) in New York and Washington, if they get the chance. This horror is also a reminder of the fatal results of mutual distrust. It appears that U.S. intelligence warned the Russian government of an impending attack — and President Putin dismissed th ..read more

In Texas, Migrants Meet a Land of Walls and Wire

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, MEXICO — When they find a shallow place to cross the Rio Grande, the two dozen migrants hoist their small children onto their shoulders and wade into the muck. Most wear shoes, because the riverbed is covered in sharp trash. But one agile man goes barefoot and darts back and forth across the river to retrieve children whose mothers prove too unbalanced to trudge through the mud with a top-heavy load. A woman in a pink puffer jacket, now half wet, stumbles and nearly falls in. The center of the river marks the border between Mexico and the United States.  The group hails fro ..read more
