Bike Mojo. It's a term that, even if you aren’t familiar with it, when you hear it, you know what it means. It’s the willingness to get up at 5am for a ride. It’s the excitement of seeing your friends out on the trail, it’s the dedication and perseverance to keep going, to improve and to practice. When you lose it, however, it’s a completely different story. Whether you were training for an event, got struck down with the flu or just minding your own business, if the joy has been sucked out of your bike rides and you just can’t seem to get out of bed you, my friend, have lost your bike mojo. Three is the magic number. What does the number 3 mean to me? Two cats plus one guinea pig… two sons plus one husband… the embarrassingly small number of questions I usually get right on University Challenge. Or, to be more cycling-specific, it's how many bikes I have (too many? Not enough?), the years I have been cycling, the sizes I have dropped in that time, and the hours it took me to climb Mont Ventoux last summer. From here, as the years inevitably increase and hopefully too the weight loss, next time I visit the windy mountain I'll be aiming for 2 hours, I might get a bit better at Univ ..read more

Whether you’ve been riding for a while now and you're cornering like you’re on rails, or whether you feel like you still have to drastically improve on all of your bike skills... there's one thing we all have in common. Facing your fears is hard No matter what your fears are, facing them is a tough gig. That is what makes it so damn satisfying when you finally crack them. I found a lump on my left breast on Tuesday the 22nd of January 2019. I had just jumped into bed to watch an episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race and was itching my chest when I found it. It felt big and really hard. I immediat ..read more

5 Ways To Be Kind to Yourself This Silly Season

I was at a client's office one day having a chat to some of the women who regularly see me there and casually asked about their Christmas plans - seeing as November is *shudder* just around the corner. One woman in particular (let's call her Sandy) had plans in the leadup to the silly season that made me need to write this. "I can't wait for Christmas," she said. Her tired eyes surrounded by dark black circles. "I've bought a special Christmas box for each of my children and each of my nieces and nephews. 13 all up." Ok, I thought. A lot of kids, but that's cute! "Each box has individual hand ..read more

In modern life, many of us spend our days predominantly behind a steering wheel or in front of a screen. It is something that does us a world of no-good. It isn’t just that our bodies aren’t active in the way they need to be to stay healthy. Spending time in boxes also breaks our connection to the natural world. As a result, we can end up feeling both sick and sad. Cycling can offer a solution to both these problems. But it is a solution that is both easy and hard. The easy part is this: in Australia, more than half of households already own a bicycle. And most of us have local streets that ar ..read more

We all know riding bikes is fun (duh!), but if you're looking to incorporate bike riding into more than a recreational activity - like riding to work, meetings or errands - it can also save you money and get you fitter! So what’s stopping you? Here are the answers to give common reasons we tell ourselves we can't ride to the dentist, the supermarket or to the office... 1) I can't be bothered changing into and out of cycling kit This one largely depends on where you're going and how far it is, but - generally speaking - it's a big myth that you need to be in cycling clothes to ride a bike ..read more

When a lot of people picture a "cyclist", what images come to mind? Possibly Tour de France or Giro professional riders, clad in tight fitting lycra splattered with advertising? Possibly MAMIL (middle aged men in lycra)'s out in full force in the mornings and in huge bunch rides over the weekend, or crammed around a single table at a cafe waiting for their flat whites in silly shoes? While these images might be what the non-cyclist brings to mind when thinking about riding bikes, we are so much more than that. Coronavirus has changed not only the fabric of our society, but how it is sewn toget ..read more

One of the most common questions we get asked is around what to do about a soreness 'down there'. If you've ever felt the rubbing, pinching, soggy hell that is a crappy chamois, you'll understand it when we say that the chamois can be a girl's best friend or her worst enemy, depending on a few very important factors.  First thing's first: if your discomfort involves soft tissue pain or numbness in the front - that is to say NOT your sit bones, but your genital area - you'll need an adjustment of your seat angle, height, fore/aft or the width/shape of the seat itself, because that is not n ..read more

While developing the Mind.Body.Bike. app (available on the App Store and Google Play Store) we realised just how many habits those of us who ride often have that may be useful to those starting out. 1 Swing your legs straight out of bed when your alarm goes off Ok so this one isn't strictly a habit for on the bike, but it is a good habit to making sure you maximise your riding time (so it totally counts). Getting up in the morning is HARD. Especially if you have kids or are a carer, as you can't always control when you go to bed and how much sleep you'll get. Obviously if you need to sleep in ..read more
