Part 2 – “What shall we do”?

Social justice is a must for every member of the kingdom of God. Social justice is a biblical issue – always has been. Social justice is an action that elevates others; it is not a protest march. It does not tear down, it builds up. Social justice is an expected concomitant of the Gospel. The fact is, as servants of God whose redemption, s servants of God whose redemption, born of love, has elevated us – to the status of “sons”, we have the duty to pass that “grace’ along. It is God’s grace, alone, that elevates (John 8:31-32; Galatians 5:1). How do we serve? With and within the grace God ha ..read more

Part 1 – “Social Justice and the disruption of 2020”

Social justice is a must for every member of the kingdom of God. Social justice is a biblical issue – always has been. Social justice was first violated in the story of Adam and Eve – immediately following the creation of the first heaven and earth; when Satan introduced temptation and sin into the human experience. It will not be eradicated or “fixed’ until we have sin and Satan eradicated and the establishment of a new creation of heaven and earth; at the end of time (see Revelation 21-22). In the meantime there will be personal wars, hatred, racism and cultural inequities. The bible address ..read more

What Are We Left With?

Well after 12 weeks of COVID-19 “lockdown” and emerging healthy, I feel both blessed by God and a bit lost, as if I was just emerging from a 12 week stay in a tornado shelter. The feeling I have now, is similar to the one I felt when a tornado destroyed my new barn a few years back. I was stupefied, alarmed, forlorn and a bit mad. But all the emotion did little to help me and nothing to resolve the financial hole, the circumstances dug for me. So I asked a very simple question, as I plotted my next steps toward the future…”what are we left with”. The answer to that was both obvious and a bit m ..read more

When One Is Enough?

During the COVID-19 “social distancing” and general lockdown, I’ve seen and heard a steady emphasis on the need for “us” to get back together. This comes in the context of every conceivable arena – work, entertainment and leisure, school, and especially Christian fellowship. And the criticism of “separation” has validity; not just economically, educationally and socially, but also spiritually. God has not only endorsed group meetings for His people, so they can experience more of the breadth and depth of the body of Christ, but He has also instituted togetherness as a reflection of His own int ..read more

What Have You Learned?

I thought about asking this question in the plural – “what have we learned?” – Then, I thought better of it. Why is that? Well, for starters, the plural “we” takes away the sting of personal responsibility, and that is what I have really been driving at these past 10 weeks. I have been trying to emphasize the personal opportunity to spend significant time with God, to deepen our relationship with Him given the “dead time” that this Pandemic has created. This, much maligned, government mandated, mitigation effort of “lock-down and social distancing”, has given us a pause from our regular, frene ..read more

It’s Been Sobering Being Sober

“Going sober means going without and that can be disquieting” This week I have been pondering the realization that COVID-19 is driving people to protest and lawbreaking as much by a lack of entertainment and hospitality as by health anxiety, social isolation or economic privation. People want to get out, to see people, be engaged in social activities, be part of the human party. Who doesn’t. But are there times to do without, to endure suffering, or even to suffering into quality life change – for the good of self and others? When is forced or voluntary sacrifice good, a noble effort for a wor ..read more

How Long?

Hey, I am losing track – is this the 8th week since we’ve met? Wow, anyone beginning to wonder, “How long”…? “How long” – I’ve been thinking of that phrase this week. First it popped up in my morning devotional schedule, when on Thursday I read in Psalms 13 these words… “How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, Having sorrow in my heart all the day? How long will my enemy be exalted over me? Ps 13:1,2 As I read I thought how common to man, is that thought, that we question God’s timing (or commitment); esp ..read more

Here we are – week 7 (or more?) and what do we know about the current pandemic? “Yale Medicine” writes that there are five things everyone should know about the “Coronavirus outbreak” “What we know about the COVID-19 is changing rapidly”. – Really, then answer the question – what the heck DO we actually KNOW – details please!? “Strict measures are critical for slowing the disease”. – Really, then how freaking strict is too strict or are we all going to have to live alone in a cave, eating bugs. HUH!? “Infection prevention is the key”. Whaaaat?! What is the perfect prevention – masks, wipes, c ..read more
