I was dreading this day…

Have you ever had an event on your calendar that you wished wasn’t going to happen? You know it’s coming up, and every time you think of it, your heart sinks. I just experienced an event I was dreading. Here’s the backstory – in February of this year, I went to a fun torchlight parade party at our local ski area. (For those of you not familiar, torchlight parades are where skiers come down the mountain with torches, after dark, creating a stunning spectacle of lights). I had a lot of friends there, and after a couple of beers, I enthusiastically said YES! to joining in on an ultra relay in the ..read more

Am I Ready to Run an Ultra?
Fine Fit Day » Running

Running an ultra was not something I had ever considered. Given the amount of training that goes into a marathon, I figured with my family, and work, training for anything past a half marathon would be too tough to pull off. Then came Covid, and a lockdown, and suddenly I was running every day and racking up the weekly mileage. I stumbled across the Vermont 50 website early in the year, saw there was a 50k option, and started seriously thinking, ‘Am I ready to run an ultra?’ I reached out to a couple of friends I knew had run the 50k in the past, for tips and opinions. I knew the training loa ..read more

The Best Running Gear for Ultra Training
Fine Fit Day » Running

I’m in the last stages of training for a 50k. After four months of dedicated training for the race, and LOTS of trial and error, I am confident I have the right running gear for ultra training. In just under two weeks, I will be lining up at the starting line of the Vermont 50, a trail ultra that starts and finishes at Mt Ascutney in Vermont. It will be the longest distance I have ever run. Years ago when I started running and racing, a half marathon seemed the longest race I would want to tackle. Then I ran the NYC marathon in 2010 and 2013, and those were some of the most special days of my ..read more

6 Tips for Finding the Right Running Shoe
Fine Fit Day » Running
by Carly Pizzani

The right running shoe is undoubtedly the most important piece of gear for runners. Anything else that you get wrong, like a long training run in a cotton t-shirt, is likely to end only in short-term discomfort. I think we all know the feeling of the shower hitting chafed areas!. But with the wrong shoes, or worn-out shoes, runners are putting themselves at risk for injury. Our feet are our point of contact with the ground. Anything that goes wrong with your feet is going to manifest all the way up your body, to your knees, hips, and spine. So how do you know what the right shoes for you are ..read more

What I Learned Doing a Running Streak
Fine Fit Day » Running

I never set out to try a running streak. It all began just as the nation and world began to shut down for the Covid-19 pandemic. I had just started training for the Covered Bridges Half Marathon in Vermont (the first half marathon I ever ran, and my favorite race of the year), when suddenly schools closed, businesses closed, and life changed. I kept training, trying to make sense of the new, crazy information that was coming at us daily. CBHM was not until June – surely this would be over by then, right? It seems crazy to have thought that way now, but there I was, hoping that somehow, the ra ..read more

Privileged

When I was thinking about, and writing the recap of the virtual half marathon I ran a week ago, the word that kept coming to mind was privileged. Because of the protests and outrage happening right now in our country, I became hyper-aware that my ability to run safely, have the time to do so, spend the time writing about the experience…it’s all such a privilege. It’s a privilege not everyone has. It is a privilege Ahmaud Arbery did not have. I think the first time my white privilege became apparent to me – in a systemic way, in a way that systems and bureaucracies were easier for me to naviga ..read more

2019 was not my best year of running. From summer 2019 onward, I was plagued with pain in my hips and back. I tried stretching, foam rolling, strength training to focus on my hips, but nothing seemed to work. In early December, I took almost a week off work, hoping that not teaching classes and not being on my feet most of the day would ‘fix’ me. It didn’t. Finally I went to physical therapy, and discovered that my pelvis was twisted out of place…something that probably happened when I fell on ice with my youngest son in December 2018 (he broke his leg in that fall, so I ignored any pain I fe ..read more

How to Start Running

Since self-isolation started in Vermont, it has been important for both me and my partner to get outside and alone every day, in order to keep sane. With 4 boys in the house, all doing online school now, it is easy for cabin fever to set in. (Read about how we were doing after our first week here). For me, it means I am running more than usual – and when I am out running, there are SO MANY people out biking, walking, running, and being active while still socially distancing. It is one of the bright spots in this situation for me. As someone whose entire career is based on making people health ..read more

Covered Bridges Half Marathon 2019
Fine Fit Day - Running

Covered Bridges Half Marathon was my first half marathon, was *this-close* to being my half marathon PR, and in the 10 times I’ve run it, I don’t ever remember having a bad time. (Well, there was that one year it poured the entire way, but I even have fond memories of that event.) So, here we go again, better late than never, my race recap for Covered Bridges Half Marathon 2019 – a decade of fun and all the reasons this is my favorite race of the year. GETTING TO THE START The start is at Suicide Six, the ski mountain of The Woodstock Inn (which moonlights as a downhill mountain biking area ..read more

Rise Run Retreat – 2019 in Woodstock, Vermont

Rise Run Retreat – a retreat for women runners and the passion project of Sarah Canney. It’s a simple concept of bringing together women who love running, who want to find connections and confidence in the company of other female runners, with plenty of running, bonding, sharing, and (of course) eating and drinking, all set in a stunning location. Last year I was able to help out Sarah last minute, when the assistant she was working with was suddenly unable to make the retreat. I loved every minute of the experience, but since I was making it work on the fly, I was running back and forth betw ..read more
