Hi friends, Its time to fill you in on my next project and this time I’m going to take you along. Virtually of course, I couldn’t possible feed you all. Its big. This week I leave St John’s and follow the Trans Canada Highway west to Victoria, BC and back looking for the heart of Canada with photos, videos, history, interviews along the ribbon of highway that links us all together.   I’ve packed up the old Volvo Wagon and headed west …and east. In the side road diversions and along blue highways, I will be seeking the heart of Canada, its past, its present and, maybe, its future. The ..read more

Sadly, I have to mark the passing of an old friend this week. Dr. Elliott Leyton was a great teacher, academic, author, font of knowledge and a somewhat cynical but hopeful lover of life.  I first met him in 1978 as a young anthropology major at Memorial University.  He taught me about the roots of violence, war, aggression, mass murder and hate in human culture and society.  This was his specialty and was considered a leading expert around the world on the subject. So much so police forces in Canada, the USA and Europe would seek him out as a consultant and criminal profiler ..read more

Life with the Fuji X Pro 3   ST JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND – Has Greg become a Fuji fanboy my friends all ask? Well, sort of I guess, but I have been a fan of Fujifilm film and technology since before the digital revolution. I have shot so much Fujichome transparency film that I had memorized emulsion numbers and batch codes. When the meter batteries died in my mechanical Nikon F2 and Leica M6 I didn’t replace them ….I KNEW exactly what exposures were needed for the Fujichrome 100 I used on a daily basis. I do miss those cameras but the world marches on and we have soulless computers for camer ..read more

Innu children at the annual Gathering by the Sheshatshiu Innu at Gull Island in central Labrador. September 30, 2021. The Innu First Nations people of Labrador in eastern Canada are the last of the indigenous nomadic hunters in North America. Their traditional lifestyle has been destroyed by hydro, mining and military operations on their traditional land. They have been trying to negotiate a lands claim agreement with the Government of Canada for 30 years without success. They number 3000 people divided between two villages at Natuashish on the north coast and Sheshatshiu in central Labrador ..read more

**. Photo by Greg Locke © 2021. Aerialist Jennifer Gushue at Flatrock, Newfoundland for a sunrise photo shoot by the ocean. Moving out of the studio or performance space meant finding a good overhanging rock building anchors in the rock face to support her. It was cold and damp and it turned out beautiful. The key is define the concept or objective, how its going to be executed, make a plan and follow it. If things are not going well you stop and correct or try another day. This true of all commercial photography. Its like making movies. go through any of the commercial, corporate or adverti ..read more

Photo by Greg Locke © 2021. BONAVISTA, NL – A little girl, her pet turkey and the photo bombing goat were not a part of the assignment but there they were while I waited for the sun to set across the road from her house. The lesson is don’t get so focused on your mission or assignment that you forget to look around you. In the security and protection business they call it “situational awareness”.  Always be aware of what is happening around you while going about you assignment or travels. This is true for photojournalism, travel and street photography especially. There is more than one ..read more

Ice climbing season was very short …but spectacular! on the east coast of Newfoundland this year. We had a rare very short winter. But we made the most of it! Here is Lewis Loader on High Anxiety near Flatrock, north of St John’s. This waterfall route comes in pretty solid and consistent every year as a 40m (120ft) WI5.     I’d like to take a moment to mark the passing of Henry Vokey of Trinity, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, at age 91. Henry was a Newfoundland cultural icon. A traditional wooden boat builder of 50 years who build an estimated one thousand boats. He built everything from the 14 foot “Rodneys”, larger trap skiffs and ocean going 60 foot schooners. His boats were work boats for fishing and travel that were a part of Newfoundland’s social, cultural and economic life for a past generation. With a distinct style everyone knew a “Vokey Boat” when they saw one.   If you ever took a sai ..read more
