Synopsis The book is about Dawn who is a death doula and Eygptologist. It's a sort of 'sliding doors' story with two parallel time lines. In one story she leaves her husband after a fight and goes to find 'the one that got away' in Egypt. In the other she returns home, we see her work, and how she and her husband navigate what comes next. We also see elements of her past with ‘The one that got away’, what pulled her away from him and meeting her husband. Review I am a long-term Picoult fan, and I was looking forward to reading this one. I'd heard that it's very different from the others so wa ..read more

Why Women are Blamed for Everything- Dr Jessica Taylor

It’s been a while, but it’s #TwitterBookReview time. I’ve been reading ‘Why Women are Blamed for Everything’ by Dr Jessica Taylor. It is about victim blaming, specifically when it comes to women who have been raped/sexually assaulted. It certainly contained a lot of information, and the topic is an important one, although I didn’t always agree with Dr Taylor’s opinions. Whilst she evidently cares about the topics and wants to support women I found that she was a bit absolute. For example when she talked about how mental health services treated women who had been sexually assaulted. She talks ..read more

Seven Signs of Life- Aoife Abbey

Synopsis ‘Seven Signs of Life’ is the memoir of an intensive care doctor. Aoife Abbey is the former BMC @TheSecretDr and this book has also been sold under the name ‘The Secret Doctor’ Review I’ve read a lot of medical memoirs, but this one is different. There is medicine in there, but it’s not the main focus of the book. The main focus is on the emotions that come from working with people who are seriously ill. Each chapter is named after a different emotion, and includes stories which illustrate that emotion. She talks about the good and bad of working in intensive care. When medical proced ..read more

Sworn Virgin- Elvira Dones

I read Sworn Virgin all the way back in February, but waited to post the review on twitter then forgot to cross-post it. It was my feminist bookclub’s last ready pre-covid, so the last time we met in person, it seems so long ago now! Synopsis ‘Sworn Virgin’ is about Hana/Mark. Hana follows an Albanian tradition where the girl in a family becomes a man. We see what brings her there, and what happens when she moves to America and becomes a woman again. Review The tradition in this books is one I’ve never heard of before, and I found it interesting, but I also felt like the story didn’t get as d ..read more

How To Be Famous- Caitlin Moran

WordPress has a new way to embed tweets…I’m not sure. I preferred the graphic side of screen grab and paste (as in my last review), but this is easier than either that or separately embedding each tweet, and it’s possible to edit the tweets to make them more like a ‘standard’ review. What do you think? Synopsis ‘How to be Famous’ is the follow-up to ‘How to Build a Girl’ it continues the story of Dolly/Johanna, a teenager and music journalist from Wolverhampton living in London. In this book she is 19, and more adult than she was in the first. Review I had enjoyed the first book, but it felt ..read more

Problems with ‘The Help’

A quick note before we start. I write this from a position of relative privilege. I am a white, straight, cis-gendered, female, from a middle-class background. With this in mind I do not presume to think I understand what it is like to live as a person of BAME background. I do however know that as well as issues with policing and crime people of BAME backgrounds face inequalities in health, education, employment, housing, and poverty, and this is not even addressing more overtly racist experiences. I’m going to leave a link at the bottom of this post to a website which lists lots of ways that ..read more
