The Slow Lane Walkers Club is set in beautiful Cornwall, close to the South West Coast Path, between the scenic villages of Trevone and Harlyn. I have friends who own a second home close to Harlyn but I wasn’t able to visit them for some hands on research because I was writing the book during the first Covid lockdown. It was a time of living our lives through Zoom and putting ring lights on Wishlists. I contacted my friends when I was deciding on a place for lead character Daniel to return to before beginning a new chapter in his life. They helped me create the backdrop to Daniel’s journey, hi ..read more

Notes From The Cotswolds… In praise of a chunky novel…
Books and The City

Over the course of writing my last six books, I have discovered that readers have incredibly strong opinions when it comes to the optimal length of a book – from the absolute ‘I will not even pick up a book that’s more than 300 pages’, all the way to ‘I want to be transported for as many pages as possible – the longer the better.’ It’s not quite the literary equivalent of Marmite, but nevertheless it’s got me thinking. Back in the day – when I would pinch the entire family’s allocation of library cards and ‘stock up’ once a fortnight – a chunky novel was my nirvana. Driven in part by practica ..read more

The Gingerbread Man

Rose Pedal delicately wrapped the home-made gingerbread man in tissue paper and placed him gently into the Christmas gift box, specifically made for a DVD it was the perfect size to house a man-shaped biscuit. She tied a red ribbon around it, curling the ends into spirals with the blunt edge of the scissors, then wrote out the glittery red star-shaped tag. For Megan xx it read, as it had done for over fifteen years. ‘I’m off to Megan’s,’ she called to her mum. Her dad, the Reverend Pedal, was getting the church ready for midnight Mass that evening. ‘Make sure you wrap up warm and don’t be too ..read more
