Lisa's Vintage Dress made up in Lady Faces cotton

Being a lover of vintage style that works in a more contemporary way I knew the fabulous Lady Faces cotton from Sewalicious would be stunning sewn up into a 1950's style frock. This print shouts out Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust days to me. It was the contrast of 70's disco meeting 1950's girly that appealed to me the most. I chose to make my frock in Gretschen Hirst's design for Butterick 6556 as this summer I'd already made this pattern up in an original 1950's cotton and absolutely loved wearing it. The wide square neckline balanced with the full skirt pleats was what drew me to this pattern ..read more

Floaty skirts have been doing the rounds this year; they’re comfy, easy to wear but oh-so-stylish, so here I’m going to show you how to draft your own! Made up in this Funky Digital - Crepe Fabric Step 1 – Cut two rectangles for the skirt pieces Take your waist measurement and measure out two pieces of your fabric at this width, so if your waist is 28”, the width of the front and back pieces will each be 28”; this way you’ll end up with double your waist measurement to gather in. Measure down from your waist to the length you would like the skirt to be, if you’re not sure, go for longer as you ..read more

The Bettine Dress by Tilly and the Buttons was one of the first garments I made as an early dressmaker. It's an excellent beginner friendly pattern with a few techniques to stretch those sewing skills whilst elevating it away from just a simple day dress. With a gorgeous deep scoop neck and a fitted elasticated waist, it’s very comfortable to wear whilst radiating a stylish summer look. I chose this blue leopard needlecord from Sewalicious for my version which I absolutely love. It's a gorgeous leopard print design on a cream base and it's even got a teeny bit of stretch in it whilst being su ..read more

The release of the Tilly and the Buttons Romy dress/top coincided with my next blog post for Sewalicious. It felt like a perfect moment to make it up. I looked at all the jerseys on the Sewalicious website and this nautical print was my favourite. This fabric can be used for children and also the big kids out there, myself included On arrival the fabric screamed quality and softness. This jersey was stable enough for this make and hangs well. The recovery in this jersey is great. It pings back and doesn’t lose its shape. Out of all the fabrics I’ve used from Sewalicious this has been my favo ..read more

As soon as the Deer and Doe Sirocco jumpsuit was released I knew it was a pattern I’d make more than once. I just love it. The first time I made it using a viscose crepe jersey and I’m not going to lie, it was a challenge!!! The fabric was so slinky! So, when the ladies at Sewalicious asked me to choose my blog fabric I thought I’d give the playsuit version a whirl and this time sew it up with scuba. Scuba is easy to sew and it doesn’t fray, theTribal Fun scuba that I used had slightly under the recommended 60% but it was close and thankfully, it has worked well. The Tribal fun - scuba pattern ..read more
