During a client zoom call today after a brief catch up about football, Covid and general life he informed me that he was super busy and was struggling to switch off, he had no time for himself or his health and fitness. Everything seemed work, work, work. This was taking a toll on him and he felt drained.  As I listened, a story from a mentor of mine George Pransky came to mind. One of his clients had decided to take his family to Disneyland. His two children were super excited and were sharing ideas of what rides they could go on and how much fun they were all going to have. However, as ..read more

Sharing the understanding with children

I had the pleasure of presenting at a private school recently to a hundred children ranging from 4-10 years old. The subject I was asked to speak around was mental health and well-being. It was a thrill having such an open minded group of little humans to work with and I would like to share one of the things that we discussed. On the big screen I showed them a photo of myself as a baby holding my favourite teddy bear. I asked them “did you have a favourite teddy or a comfort blanket?” “Yes!” they shouted. I explained to them that this was my favourite teddy and when I had it with me ..read more

There are many subjects around Trading Psychology that I thought may be of interest to you and some may be more helpful than others. This challenge is one that I regularly come up against with my clients and so I wanted to offer my thoughts around this situation that every trader experiences, some much more than others. The first thing that comes to my mind was a recent coaching session that I was having with a client when I asked him. “How affected are you by the previous trade?” His answer was quite matter of fact “quite a lot”. He continued “For example, if I have a losing trade I will auto ..read more

During a recent coaching session with one of my clients we got onto the subject of Personal and Impersonal thought. Below is part of how the session unfolded. My client is a successful businessman and has his fingers in a number of pies; one of them is running a group of traders. During this session he presented this particular challenge: Client: The thought of work makes me frustrated and I am really not enjoying going in at the moment. He has lots going on at the moment and feels he is being pulled in many directions and most of them very challenging. He believes a number of the traders mayb ..read more

I recently watched a great documentary on Netflix called Magnus and this is what I took from it. The story is of a chess player from Scandinavia who started playing at the age of six. His dad had some concerns about him and thought his love of numbers and patterns would be ideal for the game of chess. Before I go on please watch the two minute trailer What grabbed my attention was early on in the programme Magnus spoke of playing by his “intuition” and not how so many Grandmasters play which is by strategy. As he got older he got better and better beating all before him. In his early 20 ..read more

Having just returned from an extraordinary three weeks in Namibia, I wanted to share an experience with you. On our first day volunteering at a wildlife animal sanctuary, we were informed that a Honey Badger had been caught in a trap by a local farmer and the team had been to collect it for release on the reserve. Animals such as Honey badgers, lions, cheetahs and leopards are often shot by farmers as they believe that they kill their livestock. Just to give you an idea, the Honey Badger is alleged to be pound for pound the most ferocious animal in the world. We moved the caged and by now an ..read more

The illusion of 24/7 happiness

I had a recent conversation with a client who had come to me with a few personal challenges. During the session we found ourselves in a quiet mental space, where they started to see their challenges with a completely new perspective, accompanied with a “happy, contented feeling”. I was asked “how can I feel like this all the time?”. I could relate to this experience as I had previously wanted to feel good all of the time too. As we discussed this further, I was reminded of a great article by a colleague Michael Neill. ( see below) The reality is that we are never going to be happy all of the t ..read more
