My Strategies for Coping with Seasonal Depression

Earlier this year I was diagnosed with chronic major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Like many folks with mood disorders, I also tend to experience worse symptoms in the wintertime. (The regular depression/seasonal depression combo is no fun, let me tell ya.) And it makes total sense: sunshine is scarce, the weather makes me... The post My Strategies for Coping with Seasonal Depression appeared first on amandaglowgetter ..read more

Iced Shaken Espresso Honey Oatmilk Latte Recipe Starbucks Copycat

When I was filming Plant Mama for HGTV Canada back in April, I fell in love with Starbucks’ Honey Oatmilk Latte in all its sweet and savoury glory. I’ve been having fun playing barista at home, so I’ve been trying to replicate the recipe. This is an iced version inspired by that drink and the shaken espresso technique, which gives a smoother, velvetier iced latte experience. Starbucks tops their Honey Oat Latte with a “toasted honey topping”…I mixed up my own version and honestly, it seems pretty close to the real thing to me! For this recipe I used Henderson Honeybees honey, a raw, unpasteur ..read more

Soap Brows Smackdown: Best Brow Gel for Fluffy Brows
amandaglowgetter | A beauty and lifestyle blog

Sometime last year I fully abandoned my beloved brow pomades and Instagram brow look in favour of the ultra-fluffy, glued-upright brow trend. Although the look and technique itself is not new – the soap brow technique has been around for quite a while –  its newfound popularity is in part tanks to the Patrick Ta Major Brow Wax and the sudden influx of similar products. So I went on a little quest in search of the best soap brows product to achieve that fluffy laminated brow look, including newer products designed for this purpose, and a few unconventional, repurposed products. So if you ..read more

How to Plan a Wedding in a Pandemic
amandaglowgetter | A beauty and lifestyle blog

Wedding planning during the COVID-19 pandemic is no easy feat. I learned this firsthand when Josh and I got engaged in February 2020. For about 9 months, I felt overwhelmed. I just wanted a normal wedding, not a “COVID wedding.” We had a number of tentative conversations about what a wedding in a pandemic could hypothetically look like for us but didn’t actually do any planning until Fall of 2020. It took me the better part of the year to let go of my wedding expectations and reassess what my priorities were. If you’re in a similar boat, here are 6 tips I wish I knew last spring when app ..read more

2020 Favourites – Makeup, Hand Sanitizer, Skincare, Curly Hair Products

I have mixed feelings about the New Year. I don’t like resolutions. I don’t like the influx of weight loss ads. I don’t like the assumption that 11:59 on the 31st and 12:01 on the 1st make you a fundamentally different person. But what I do enjoy is seeing everybody’s favourite products from the year…so here are mine. Earthtones Naturals Curl Define Gelly This year I stopped using my long-time favourite curly hair brand, DevaCurl. Long story (not so) short, a number of bloggers and consumers came forward to share their experiences of hair loss and damage while using the products. Although I h ..read more

Three Reasons to Add a Facial Mist to Your Routine & Three Facial Mists I Like

I used to think that facial mists – by which I mean skincare-focused, hydrating facial sprays – were useless. I wouldn’t use them, or I would skip them in my skincare routine. But now…I guess I’m a facial mist convert for a variety of reasons. If you’re a facial mist skeptic like I was, here are three reasons to add a facial mist to your routine and three mists I like. It feels nice. Why do we use skincare? For its benefits, yes – to achieve or maintain hydrated, healthy skin – but also for the experience. For many folks – myself included – skincare is part of their self-care, which is so imp ..read more

How I Decide Which Brands to Work With

Octopied Mind sent me this tee – I graciously accepted because they’re a local brand and I think they’re rad! If you follow me on Instagram, you might have noticed an increase in posts that are sponsored, or where I have received the product in PR. A little while ago, my IG friend Julie messaged me asking how I decide which brands and companies to work with. My answer to her was a little haphazard, but it got me thinking. I really think I could’ve benefitted from this kind of post earlier in my blogging and social media life, and a big part of my content strategy is to make the kind of c ..read more

Summer Favourites 2020
amandaglowgetter | A beauty and lifestyle blog

This summer has been particularly brutal. I’ve had ongoing flares for a chronic illness, learned I need surgery, and have been struggling with my mental health (as many of us are) because of increased isolation to try to keep myself and others safe. In the spring I basically didn’t wear makeup or nail polish for a few months, but I’ve been slowly getting back into makeup and other beauty things as the end of summer approaches. These have been some of my go-to beauty bits! Maybelline Age Rewind Concealer in Tan // I’ve been skipping foundation (as I normally do in the summertime) and in my opi ..read more

My Home Office Standing Desk Setup (for Chronic Pain)
amandaglowgetter | A beauty and lifestyle blog

I’m not sure if I’ve talked about it on here before – I’ve certainly mentioned it on Instagram – but I live with chronic illnesses. Two of these illnesses are correlated: hidradenitis suppurativa and pilonidal disease, the latter of which I require surgery for, and both of which can make it difficult to sit for long periods of time. And I’m not alone: being able to stand while working a desk job is key for pain management for many folks with chronic illnesses and health conditions. I shared my sit-stand desk setup on Instagram and lots of folks were interested, so I thought I’d share what I g ..read more
