The lucky ones.

Come from love, return to love. Hold your hopes for the world like your golden-haired boy, because they are one, and the same. Your child: each child, each leaf, each tear, each touch. It is only love that can show us how to walk from here to there, how to care for all things, how to heal each self that is not us, but might have been. We are the lucky ones, those of us who woke this morning to the warbling of birds asking “how will you love today?”. … The most precious afternoon exploring on one of Sydney’s very special northern beaches. Jerusha is an incredible Sydney birth and family ph ..read more

The Woods

If you go down to the woods today, one thing is for sure: it won’t be boring. While I do love making family photos at home, I think it is just as special to head out somewhere interesting for an adventure, particularly once kids get a little older, or if you know they are high energy, and love being in nature. The great thing about heading out to a beach, or a forest, is that makes it so easy to avoid having to pose or be more formal, I can just focus on capturing your family in a really natural way, letting curiosity lead our exploration. That makes kids really happy and comfortable, which ..read more

Adventures in Flinders

This beautiful spot in Flinders along Melbourne’s Mornington Peninsula has become super popular for family photography sessions over the last year or so, and with good reason. With a beautiful protected beach below, and stunning windswept clifftops above, this is a spectacular location to explore, worthy of the hour or so drive from central Melbourne. This gorgeous family, visiting from Singapore, were keen to explore a part of Victoria they hadn’t seen before, with beaches a little more wild than what they are used to, which is part of their charm. They had the most wonderful afternoon, topp ..read more

Bandaids and backyard hangs

There’s this new term that’s popped up in family photography over the last few years, ‘family lifestyle photography’, which I sometimes think means more to photographers than it does to people trying to search for natural family photography. But really, all it is is natural family photography that just leaves the cheese and the forced smiles back in the 1980s where they belong. So, if you and your family are pretty happy hanging out at home, and you ‘get’ that the real memories are made up of sisters hugging in a way which causes everyone to roll off the sofa onto the floor, and that it’s perf ..read more

A week in Taormina (part two of That Winter We Went to Europe Instead)

In 2017 our family took two months off to head to Spain and Sicily. We travelled a month in each, spending a week at each destination, staying in villas and airbnb accommodations, generally perching in more out of the way places and just immersing ourselves in everything local. I blogged the Spanish part of the trip quite some time ago, after making albums, but have only just gotten around to making the two Italian albums, and so having enjoyed revisiting these photos. I thought I’d share some favourites in case I can inspire anyone else to head off on whatever family adventure might be lurkin ..read more

Love in any language

How many words do we use in a day?How many of them are about traffic and spaghetti and laundry? How many of them are for expressing the deep wild love you have for your life and your people? How many of them are set aside to express the things you’d say, if only you knew how few important words you will ever speak. These photos; they are the poems we would write, the phrases we can’t quite touch, the infinite loves that reside in our heart and whose bloodlines are more intricate than we have words to say, and yet how we yearn to say them.Speak of love; I want to encourage you. In any language ..read more
