Kacey FiField
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
With a gently strummed guitar introduction, Left Behind sees Kacey Fifield’s vocals take centre-stage from the song’s beginning. The vocal initially hooks you in, the earnest delivery exposing a trusting sense of vulnerability. It is the pulsing bass and racing melodies that kick in, approximately a quarter into the song’s duration, that set the song’s pace, however. The song creates the feeling of running to keep up, like a sprint down a hill that will only end when you either fall over, or reach th ..read more

Holly Wild
Cuts Me Up
Opening with Holly’s own bluesy, smoky vocals, and a lilting, strummed guitar, Cuts Me Up gives the impression of a certain timidity. That is shattered, however, as the song hits its first chorus, an earth-shaking bass-drop underlining Wild’s delivery.
The result is a song that feels both coy, and knowing. As Holly sings about living with the aftermath of a relationship turned sour, she appears to be both heartbroken, and completely in control. She sings about being cut up, and yet, notably, admits ‘I know I was the one with the knife’.

Nieri
Every Feeling
Having appeared twice on BlackPlastic last year, Italian-born, LA-based electronic music artist Nieri is back with new song Every Feeling.
Starting with an understated intimacy, the record sees Nieri’s vocal set against a simple-yet-effective synth pattern. As it proceeds, however, Every Feeling builds towards a kind of gospel crescendo. Overdubbed vocal harmonies shimmer with a heavenly layer of reverb as the bass and drums gradually lift Nieri’s vocal performance. By the bridge preceding the final chorus, the song has a buoyancy that reflects the song’s personal, inspira ..read more

Dream Say
Feels Like Home
Hailing from Boston, Dream Say are an electro-pop outfit drawing inspiration from modern both modern acts like Chvrches and MGMT, as well as Prefab Sprout. There is clearly something in the water right now because all three have recently been cited by artists I’ve covered. Or perhaps that’s just my taste showing.
Having connected on Craigslist in late 2023, duo Zach Balder and Sebastian Badon quickly got to work, releasing their first two singles in just a few months. With Balder providing vocals, keys and sax, and Badon guitar, drums and production, the pair create ..read more

Take My Picture
Take My Picture is the first collaborative effort from future.exboyfriend and previous BlackPlastic featured artist Bad Heather. Here together, the pair channel a sleazy, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic. _Take My Picture_is partly riffing on the sounds of LCD Soundsystem and MGMT, but with an extra dose of modernist pop.
Beyond collaborators, Bad Heather and future.exboyfriend are friends and room-mates. Together, they were inspired to make Take My Picture based on their ‘shared experiences and candid talks about the music industry's competitive edge and local sce ..read more

JW Francis
Orbit
JW Francis is an intriguing individual. Born in Oklahoma, raised in Paris and now based in New York, he was once the assistant to someone who won a Nobel Prize, is a licensed NYC tour guide and owns a murder mystery business. His scratchy, lo-fi indie-alt-pop has a similarly eclectic feel to it, taking inspiration from the city Francis now calls home.
Taking inspiration from The Velvet Underground and the music of New York over the decades, JW Francis sounds a little like a three-minute distillation of Meet Me In The Bathroom, Lizzy Goodman’s oral history of New York’s post-2 ..read more

Meg Chandler
Let Me Out
Meg Chandler is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter hailing from the British countryside of Shropshire. Growing up in a home of music lovers, the impact of her parents playing music impacted her, and the sound she now channels through her music making.
That sound sees Meg marrying elements of folk, together with Indie and pop. The result, on display here on new single Let Me Out, has a textured, earthy feel to the production and instrumentation. This only helps to further accentuate the dream-like quality of Chandler’s vocal performance, with layering that creates a sense ..read more

Operator Music Band
As It Goes
As It Goes is a song born out of physical trauma. Whilst working with new producers Mike Bloom (of XL Recordings) and Noah Prebish (of Brooklyn outfit Psymon Spine), Operator Music Band’s Jared Hiller was the victim of an accident. The result saw him fall a terrifying 20 feet through a warehouse skylight, tumbling directly into Rough Trade’s warehouse. What followed was an extended period of recuperation, as Hiller set about recovering from two broken wrists, six broken ribs and fractal fractures that led to permanent hearing loss.
Now mostly back on form, Opera ..read more

Courtney Farren
I’m Not Alone (I’m Lonely)
SF-born, LA-based musician and BlackPlastic regular, Courtney Farren is back again. Her new single, I’m Not Alone (I’m Lonely) follows on from previous releases that include the Rabbit King EP, and its preceding singe, White Rabbit. This new song comes as the lead single from Farren’s debut album, expected to launch in Q2 of 2024.
In contrast to those releases, I’m Not Alone (I’m Lonely) has both a greater sense of polish, the crunchy drums and lo-fi sound of White Rabbit entirely absent. In their place we have a style that evokes long California roa ..read more

Aves Feat. Markus Perttula
Silent Solitude
Aves appeared on BlackPlastic back towards the end of 2023 with their collaboration with Icelandic vocalist, JFDR, on Hunting Points.
Here, on new single Silent Solitude, the Helsinki-based trio are back with another collaboration. This time, vocals come from Finnish singer-songwriter Markus Perttula, whose delicate falsetto glints with a glossy, translucent quality.
Hunting Points was a gentle embrace — heavenly vocals combined with slowly paced melodies to create something calming and beautiful. In contrast, Silent Solitude is a slowly heated slab ..read more
