Young Heims entered AARCS’ care as part of a group of transfers from a partner shelter in Saskatchewan. Facing capacity issues and high demand from their community, they desperately needed to move some animals out in order to re-open intake. AARCS agreed to make the trip and take several dogs and cats for rehoming. Heims was among those who made their way to Calgary and found herself under AARCS’ care for her journey to adoption. Once she arrived, and as part of her adoption preparation, Heims was dewormed, vaccinated, microchipped and spayed. In addition, Heims had a couple of fractured t ..read more

After an extensive four-month period of caring for animals displaced by the devastating wildfires, our teams successfully returned the last of the remaining owned animals to Little Red River Cree Nation at the end of September. With our large vans now empty in the far north, we seized the opportunity to extend assistance to a partner shelter. Northern Lights Regional Humane Society, facing significant capacity challenges and having to turn animals away, welcomed our offer to help. AARCS transport teams spent the night, and bright and early the following morning, they emptied the shelter ..read more

Often it’s not convenient having your dog in the kitchen when you cook. So we’re going to teach them that they’re not allowed past a certain boundary, into the kitchen. First, decide where these boundaries will be. If there are clear entry points, these are the best options. Often there will be flooring changes to mark the boundary (e.g. from wood to tile), but you can also put tape on the floor as a marker. This marker is more of a reminder for the humans & can be removed later. Stand on the kitchen side of the boundary & toss treats to your dog over the boundary If they try t ..read more

“We adopted Scooby (Previously known as Canon) in August of 2022 after only fostering him for a short period of time. I fell in love with him instantly, it’s like a bond I can’t even explain. We had no idea if he’d like our other dogs, or how he would be with our children but as soon as he came into our home, it’s like we found the final piece to our puzzle. This boy is special and I knew that from the minute I laid eyes on him. We definitely weren’t looking to adopt another dog, we were just getting started on our fostering journey after I had already been volunteering at the AARCS sh ..read more

“I have had pets my whole life. Dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, birds. You name it. When I first moved out on my own the first thing I did was get a kitty to keep me company. Literally the same day I moved out, we unloaded the truck and then my roommate and I went and got a cat. My pets have always been a huge comfort to me, so when I found out about AARCS I signed up to start volunteering immediately and have now been volunteering for 8 years in all sorts of different roles. I currently have 3 cats of my own, although I jokingly say I have 2 and ⅔’rds cats as I have a very special kitty named ..read more
