Wolverine Wednesday: Easy Warde

Warde did a good job of hiring Dusty May the top available coaching candidate in the NCAA this year.  A job well done.   He also took a shot at his social media critics yesterday.  Warde you have done some good things as AD at Michigan but also some head scratching mistakes.  We don't need to list them as its a decent size list.  With maybe the highest profile, not locking down Jim Harbaugh over the past two years.  Yes, he was always interested in returning to the NFL but your lack of relationship and management allowed him to leave.   Good leader ..read more

Michigan Monday: May Day in March

When it was clear Juwan was heading out of the program, I said Warde should make two phone calls.  #1 is to Jay Wright and #2 to Dusty May.  I don't' know if Jay was ever in play but many insiders have said, he has no interest in today's NIL world.  Which would make FAU's Dusty May, mine and Warde's #1 pick.   Warde quickly pulled the trigger and got Dusty a day after FAU lost in the tournament. I'm uniquely qualified to discuss Dusty.  My son just graduated from FAU and he and my wallet went to the Final 4 last year.   So I've watched more then my fair ..read more

My expectation is that there will be a ton of NFL executives in Ann Arbor today for Michigan's Pro Day to watch JJ and all the draft eligible Wolverines participate in drills.  Jim will be attending with Jessie Minter and Ben Herbert. 7 NFL Head Coaches and 9 GM's are expected to attend as well.  Plus a ton other NFL OC's, DC's, and other position coaches.  Update: Matt Miller from ESPN says he expects there are 150+ NFL Personnel at today's Pro Day.  JJ is probably the most discussed QB on ESPN right now as NFL team decide if he is a top 5 pick or a lock for Minnesota at ..read more

Here are the low lights from his arrest: -Greg was stopped on S.Fifth with his hazards and not moving at 2:15AM on 3/16   -Police pulled alongside of him and asked him to pull over.  -Greg continued down the street and pulled into a gas station -Greg said he was at the Chop House and Pretzel Bell that night and had two drinks -He was a bit lost being new to Ann Arbor and was trying to get to his home  -Took a breath test and blew .016, took a second and blew a .017 Michigan limit is .08.  We will have to monitor this situation to see how it gets resolved in the cour ..read more

Wolverine Wednesday: More Basketball Departures

Like I mentioned yesterday, whoever Michigan hires as their next head basketball coach will have to rebuild this entire roster and I expect Michigan fans welcome that rebuild.   Tarris Reed and Yo Yo are the latest two to the portal.  The new coach is going to have a blank canvas and the promise of playing time for portal players.  Tarris averaged 26.5 minutes a game and 9 points.  Youssef Khayat under 6 minutes and 1.4 points a game.  I heard yesterday that there are about 4000 D1 Basketball Players.  Over 2000 are expected to be in the portal.  There ..read more

Michigan Tuesday: Blow it Up!

Many Michigan Basketball players and recruits will be hitting the portal and decommitting.  Which I say, good luck at your next stop!  The Michigan Basketball program needs a complete reboot and losing players or recruits is not a concern at this point.   Bring in new coaches and get new players in.  Dug, Michigan's top scorer who struggled in the classroom hit the portal as soon as it opened.   Khani Rooths a 2024 recruit decommitted.  George Washington 3 had jumped in the portal first.    Good luck guys! Update: Tarris Reed has jumped in the ..read more

It had to be done.  Juwan was struggling with his health, with his players, his staff, and winning games.  That was just this past season.  In 2021 which doesn't seem that long ago Juwan was the national coach of the year.   Now, he is probably headed for an NBA assistant role next season.  If he even wants to coach, Juwan made a ton of money in his NBA career and I assume he doesn't need to work and might want to take some time away from the game.  The bottom line is, I don't believe Juwan had the patience for the college game which is changing every year ..read more

Michigan Thursday: Well That Was a Surprise

Michigan fans have been upset in the past when Wolverine coaches left for Columbus.  Greg Mattison and Al Washington come to mind.   We knew Greg would flame out quickly as he was near retirement, which he did and Al didn't stay long before he jumped to Notre Dame.  Now the reverse has happened, Tony Alford OSU's well known RB Coach is jumping from the Buckeyes to the Wolverines and replacing the role Mike Hart just left.   Now we all love Mike and hope his personal situation is not too serious and he is an elite developer of talent.  The issue is, he strugg ..read more

Wolverine Wednesday: I'm the OG of the System

Wink Martindale has a lot of ground to make up with me personally.  If you read this blog regularly, you know what I think of that hire.  Wink had some of his first public on "In The Trenches" a podcast by Jon Jansen.  One line caught my eye:  "It's like I told the players: In all humility, I'm the OG of the system, so we're gonna be just fine." On Mason and Kenneth: The thing that you see — and this is through the Draft process, and when you're evaluating college guys coming out — is the lack of technique that a lot of them play with. And these guys are square ..read more

Michigan Monday: Can't Have Both

Michigan fans would love Michigan Football and Basketball to be really good at the same time.   Yes, we have had recent examples where that has happened, but Michigan Football just reached the summit of the sport and Michigan Basketball finished last in the Big Ten with 23 loses.  We knew Michigan Basketball would be bad between Juwan's health issue, a physical conflict with S&C coach Jon Sanderson, and a rigged admission office.  We didn't know they would be awful.  Juwan has pretty much used up all his good will as a former Fab 5 member and hasn't been able to ..read more
