Hurray for the Riff Raff Bring Intimate Energy to House of Blues
The Triton
by Finnegan Bly

On April 4, 2024, I attended Hurray for the Riff Raff’s show in the Voodoo Room at House of Blues. They played an energetic and competent set, even if the show felt minimal in lieu of the emotional vulnerability of the band’s music. Hurray for the Riff Raff have been around for a while. Alynda Segarra, the band’s frontperson, put out their first music under the name nearly two decades ago, steadily releasing albums every few years since. I was first introduced to their music in 2022 with their streamlined, synth-rock-inspired album Life on Earth. On that record, Segarra’s voice was louder tha ..read more

Evil Does Not Exist, the latest film by critically acclaimed Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, premiered at the Venice Film Festival last September. The film, which was shown at the 2023 San Diego Asian Film Festival (SDAFF) last November, plays out like a piece of slow cinema, an ecocritical film, and a magical realist piece all in one. The film portrays the interaction between the villagers of Mizubiki, a mountain village near Tokyo, and a development company that wants to build a glamping site in the area. Evil Does Not Exist leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat for the whole mov ..read more

Alan Palomo’s “World of Hassle” Album Review
The Triton
by Tate McFadden
5d ago
The theme of the tragically aged partier is a classic one in American pop culture, from Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville,” and Harmony Korine’s Beach Bum, to our obsession with “where are they now” documentaries. Alan Palomo tells this story on his 2023 retro synth LP World of Hassle, his first solo album away from his band Neon Indian. World of Hassle is a bildungsroman or a memoir, which walks the line between satire of and homage to ‘80s club music. As the album’s speaker moves from naive youth to hard partier to old and beaten tragic figure, the listener is swept up in the luxuriant, entici ..read more
