UC San Diego’s Associated Students Office of Concerts and Events (ASCE) kicked off 2024 with Horizon, a two-day concert experience headlined by Larry June and Thee Sacred Souls. The concert, held at the UCSD Epstein Family Amphitheater, was free for students but had a limited number of tickets available. Horizon 2024 is the third concert under the same name hosted by ‘ASCE’ since 2020. At approximately 8:41 p.m. Saturday night, officers responded to the intersection of Nobel Drive and Lombard Place where they found two men who had been shot, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD).
Based on the preliminary investigation, the two men were driving into an apartment parking structure when the suspect approached on foot and fired multiple shots into the victims’ vehicle.
A man in his 30s died from his injuries at the hospital. A 39-year-old man remained in the hospital in stable condition.

The Ché Café was erected in 1980 by a group of students as a nod to the Argentine Marxist, Che Guevara. This student-run cooperative and vegan café is located next to the La Jolla Playhouse, south of Revelle College and the developing Eighth College. For students looking to discover a unique coffee blend or to get their caffeine fix on campus, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has swooped into UC San Diego’s cafe scene. The outdoor coffee stand is nestled on the east side of campus, adjacent to the Central Campus Trolley Station.
After several soft launches during the winter of 2022, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is now open for good, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

UC San Diego’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) organized a series of walkouts over the past month to express their support for the people of Palestine throughout the recent escalating conflict in the Middle East. This comes in response to the ongoing conflict happening in the Gaza Strip, primarily, after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.

On Tuesday, October 18th, 2023, Warren College freshman Rex Shaw realized that he lost his wallet while returning from a shopping trip.
“I was just going to 99 Ranch Market to buy some fresh groceries. This college really doesn’t like providing vegetables in its dining halls. I needed some bok choy! But when I got home, I realized my wallet was gone,” said Shaw.

One person was killed when their Cessna 210N crashed Wednesday night, according to officials.
The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) received a report of an aircraft down near Downwind Way and Expedition Way around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday, prompting an extensive search around the area of Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The U.S. Coast Guard, San Diego Fire Department, San Diego Lifeguards, and San Diego Police Department (SDPD) assisted in the search with air, ground, and marine assets.

Hundreds gathered in a series of demonstrations across UC San Diego over the past month in support of Palestine. Organized by UCSD’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), demonstrators honored the lives lost in Palestine following attacks by Israel.
On October 12, about a hundred students and community members gathered around the Silent Tree outside Geisel Library for what SJP at UCSD described as a “moment of silence and commemorative speeches to honor our martyrs.”
