Does only the top coat of sheen matter?

I made the mistake of not shaking a gallon of Bona Mega-1 semi-gloss finish. So half my floor is really shiny and the bottom half of the gallon got progressively duller until almost nothing at the end. I also found several long hairs in that coat and removed them after it dried. I did board recoats but shook well this time and those spots are shiny. I abraded the entire floor in prep for another coat but there are still some noticeable differences in the sheen in various areas. Does this matter? will those differences flash through the top coat like a drywall patch that does not get primed an ..read more

Floor re-finisher recommendation in Brooklyn, NY

Does anyone have a recommendation for a floor refinsher in Brooklyn, NY. It will be plus or minus 3,000 sq ft spread over 3 floor. Almost all the furniture is out. The floor is 100+ years old top nailed oak with cherry feature strips. Because of the age I know some areas are getting thin, so I am looking for someone who can carefully sand/strip the old finish, likely varnish and poly, while removing a minimal amount of wood. Recoat will be with Rubio Monocoat. Thanks for you help. Steven submitted by /u/Ill_Contribution1741 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I have a question on cleaning the floors

So through a series of events I ended up living in a house with pretty nice hardwood floors. Thing is, we have an elderly dog who pisses on the floor. Now we love our dog so mop the floor every morning with hot water and a splash of bleach. I've been doing it for about 2 months. Am I messing up the floor lol? I got pine sol but I don't really love the smell. Any advice? submitted by /u/PortlandPatrick [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

How can I repair this? My dad dropped a small but dense and heavy espresso machine thingy on the floor and it chipped up the poly. Can I just dab a little poly in that hole? How to proceed? submitted by /u/sabresword00 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Refinishing Question

Our house was built in 1960/61, and is 95% rift and quarter sawn white oak. Previous owners mixed in some red oak in the kitchen. They also did a very bad job refinishing areas of the house (looks like they just added poly over the top - flaking off, hairs embedded, etc). Our subfloor is plank only. There's lots of noise from the floor and also that carry through the floors. Rather than just sand in-place and refinish, I was thinking something like this: going sections at a time pull up the hardwood, run them through a drum sander to remove old finish add plywood subfloor and maybe a noise d ..read more

So y’all remember these oak stairs I installed the other day? Well, I noticed one tread making a strange sound when stepped on. Looking closer, it looks like the top layer of the wood is almost delaminating! It’s hardwood but the way it was cut across the grain or whatever, there’s a layer lifting a bit. Hard to capture in the photo but when I scratch across the surface with my fingernail there’s that hollow type sound/feel. Like a piece of paper. Do I try to sand this or what? Replace the tread? I guess it’s a good thing I did them too down ?, but I used PL Premium so it won’t be easy to ..read more

ISO Advice/Options: 4 inch wide cutouts in our floor.

We ripped up the carpet in our guest room, knowing there was hardwood underneath that matched the rest of our house. We were excited until we got near the north wall. Any advice on what to do with these cutouts? This one is about half the length of the room (about 6 feet long), then there's a shorter one close to the door (same width, maybe 2 feet long, not connected to the gap pictured). We know it won't be seamless or even match, and we're open to a visible mending options--just not even sure where to start. https://preview.redd.it/t8o6m7kgzfwc1.jpg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=we ..read more

Guys installing wood are wrapping things up and will be doing kitchen (LVT) next. On day 2, I told boss man I found 2 split boards in LV when I was dusting. Since they have let other things slide, I asked if this was also something acceptable to him. He looked at one and said he would use filler. The other piece was buried under boxes. It has a split section that is sticking up higher than rest of board. I fear the minute someone hits that just right with a shoe, it's going to splinter out. I was hoping to hear the words, that is not acceptable and we'll swap them out. Is filler a permane ..read more
