Bringing her unique abundance of energy and joy to the stage, Ellie Hartman delighted friends and strangers alike with a few hours of originals and covers at Insomnia Coffee Company. A full-time student at George Fox college and a retreat camp host on weekends, you can often find Ellie playing farmer’s markets, coffee shops and wineries on Portland’s West side. Learn about her and check out some videos on her Facebook page. There is a bunch of her music to browse on Soundcloud, and a little of everything on Instagram. Mondays can be a little sleepy at McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern which is a great time to invite artists in for a month-long residency to perform some more intimate shows. Mondays are actually a great time to really enjoy some music with your food and drink. In September 2019, it was Megan Diana‘s turn. Her one-line description reads: “If a Siren played a Wurlitzer”. She is one half of Bigfoot Mojo, can play just about anything with strings, an accomplished dancer and composer. Belinda Underwood enjoyed a Monday night residency at McMenamins Rock Creek Tavern in August 2019. I brought my camera to her August 19 show, and captured “We’re All Sparks”.

Coming with a blend of bluesy original music, folksy contemporary covers and some classics, it was my pleasure to hear Kyndel Dollison recently at Clark’s Bistro and Pub. Her covers included artists like Coldplay, Tracy Chapman and Fleetwood Mac. Kyndel’s original music was real and honest, representing a wide range of emotions and life situations. The standout original song for me was “Where I Am Found” as I’m a sucker for a warm and fuzzy love song.

The Bridge City Blues Band have been playing together for over six years. They have made their reputation playing a high energy mixture of rhythm and blues standards both classic and new, from Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters to Bo Dudley, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Albert Collins, Sonny Boy Williamson and BB King, Taj Mahal and many more. I recently captured a Muddy Waters tune at McMenamins Rock creek Tavern.

The end of March is a tumultuous time, as the weather finds its place in between winter and spring, we all collectively get used to it being a brand new year, and thousands of musicians around the world suddenly realize that the NPR Tiny Desk Contest is right around the corner and scramble to get together an entry to hopefully catch the attention of the universe. Out of this swirling mass, the calm, playful, and spiritual tones of Treneti’s video “Ra Recorded” caught my eyes, ears, and heart.

I caught Wil Kinky flying solo recently at Clark’s Bistro and Pub in downtown Hillsboro. Nobody manages a loop better than Wil. Enjoy watching and hearing him layer together this Bill Withers classic.
