Wonky House with: Lyra Valenza – Gameshow

I’m a bit partial to the Numberwang gameshow but its theme isn’t terribly memorable so here’s Lyra Valenza with something more suitable in the form of a wonky techno house pumper Gameshow. Lyra Valenza might sound Southers European or even South American. But it’s neither. It’s a Jens Konrad and Hjalte, aka the Copenhagen-based duo who are also “cross-dimensional travellers’ haven”, Petrola 80. This new identity has allowed them to get a bit more ravey on their new album Low Gear No Pressure from which Gameshow is taken. Available on vinyl via Bandcamp. Gameshow is at one level a harking back ..read more

An untroubled double for this Ambient Sunday with Mark Driver, and Synesthete. It’s a first time here for Mark Driver. He’s a new artist from Seattle, Washington. His new Ignition EP is intended as “A melancholy journey through the landscape of the Pacific Northwest.” Let’s have a listen to the title track. Ignition is a gentle soul full of downtempo and downbeat sounds. Mark says of it “Ignition is meant to capture that perfect moment, driving alone at night, surrounded by dark, only your headlights and music to guide you.” Sonically, this offers a slow and gentle start with waves of sound t ..read more

Cool house music with: Terence David – Generate
Acid Ted

Here’s some House music for a Saturday but more for staying in than going out. The artist is Terence David. Terence David is from the UK. He says “House music all life long.” and that’s all we got. Here’s new track Generate. Generate is one of those tracks that is happily, wilfully untrammelled by genres. This is House music but it’s also a bit IDM in places, acid in others, and Berlin cool for good measure. The opening manages to mix a stabby rave sentiment to an elastic 80s bass and chilled synth chords. It should sound a total mess. But it’s effortlessly not. It’s too cool for school. Not ..read more

Dark downtempo with: Ghost Buttons – Dark Matters (Downstep) Theme

If you’re feeling down as it’s not yet the weekend, here’s a track in which to wallow. A spectral sonic sojourn with Ghost Buttons. Ghost Buttons is a producer from Bristol, England. And he continues in the steps of people like Massive Attack in the fusing of diverse styles. His torch song downtempo dub debut Dark Matter was released in 2023 but it’s already getting a reworking/reimagining. Dark Matters (Downstep) – Theme is a darker, bleaker piece. The vocals have been discarded. What’s left is a dystopian rolling around in the dark underbelly of cost of living crisis UK. This track is unrem ..read more

Downtempo back to the roots with: Good Lee – Sinaja

I can’t believe it’s been three years since we had Good Lee here. Immediate rectification required. Here’s new single Sinaja. Good Lee (Patrick Gutensohn) is an Austrian musician and producer based in Vienna but he has Philippine roots. And his new track is an homage to that. He says, “This new track is dedicated to my mothers birthplace in Sinaja / Belison in the Philippines which is also my second home. I began to feel a calling to reconnect with my Filipino roots more nowadays and channeling memories and ancestral energy of the past and present to transform it into sound with my own touch ..read more

Experimental electronica from: Jabooty – Solitude

A new name for an established artist but taking a musical road less travelled. Here’s Jabooty. Jabooty is from Boise, Idaho and is a new pseudonym for INTRASol, an experimental bass artist. That experimental nature is fully on show on new track Solitude. Happily, the bass is kept on a short leash. Solitude manages to be downtempo, drum and bass, and chilled house but whilst also managing to be none of these. It’s too experimental to be constrained by usual genres. And yet it’s not too experimental to forget to bring a tune and a lightness of touch. Opening with a brash splash of reverb this s ..read more

Ambient Sunday carries waves of euphoric emotion with: Doug Buckley – 013124

Ambient Sunday is diving deep into another green world with Doug Buckley. Doug Buckley is probably American but doesn’t offer much background other than he’s an “Independent multi-instrumentalist and innovative producer.” And that he’s “Taking pages from the book of ambient music sired by Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Robert Fripp.” This hints at his past in Boston indie band Long Shadow Sheep. All of this means that he comes at ambient from an indie direction, or more properly a sort of post rock sentiment. But featured track 013124 is more than a noodle fest. It’s a three minute beatless am ..read more

Saturday techno with: Gasphonic – Nege
Acid Ted

Some techno for your Saturday night from Gasphonic. But with essence of melodic techno and tech house. Gasphonic returns to these parts after a debut towards the end of last year. But I know know more than that they hail from Italy. So, on to the music. The featured track is Nege. And I’ve no idea what that means either. Perhaps an idiot or to move rapidly. Moving rapidly on to the track for fear of looking stupid. Nege is a confident main room floor filler but with enough cussedness to make things interesting. The beats are full and immediate. The synths are quite far into melodic techno but ..read more

Beats and guitars with: Alain B – Irons

Friday is breaking out the beats and guitars with Alain B. The track is Irons but sadly isn’t in honour of The Irons’ defeat of Freiburg on Thursday. Alain B is from Montreal in Canada but seems to have Spanish connections. His biog says “Alain B vive en Montreal, Canadá. La música es necesaria en la vida. Toda mi canción promueve el amor y el respeto por la mujer y el hombre.” He says his work is similar to Calvin Harris and David Guetta (*shudder*). Thankfully that’s not true in this case. It owes more to the scuzzy efforts of Brock Landars on SMDU (see below) or The Prodigy. Irons is the f ..read more

Downtempo two way with: pink eclipse, and Richard Mondek
Acid Ted

As a departure from the usual single track days here’s a couple of different ways of doing downtempo. Pink eclipse goes for a slow Boom Bap while Richard mondek does a more modern Trap style. Pink eclipse is from the USA. He(?) does “lofi music & beats from california”. Here’s a track from new album Sneaky Capricorn. where’s your growth [no caps, no question mark] is the featured track. It’s a lovely mellow tune. Opening with a little drifting keyboard and some surface noise beats arrive to give this a solid start. The main riffs follow thereafter. But all the while the beat ploughs slowl ..read more
