AnnaMarie Knorr was appointed as Maricopa City Council’s newest member tonight.  The council unanimously gave her the nod over a dozen other applicants for the position vacated by Rich Vitiello, who is running for Pinal County supervisor.  Knorr sees transportation infrastructure, additional services and opportunities for residents, jobs and economic development as the most important issues facing the city.  She said she was honored the council would tap her.  “My goal is to make sure Maricopa is a great place to work and play and do what I can with the state and local aut ..read more

A crash involving at least two vehicles slowed southbound State Route 347 traffic even more this afternoon, blocking the left turn lane. One person was injured in a crash on John Wayne Parkway and Cobblestone Farms Drive this afternoon, affecting the flow of southbound traffic just at the start of rush hour. Emergency crews responded to the call around 2:30 p.m. for a crash in the centermost lane, according to city spokesperson Monica Williams. Although Maricopa Fire and Medical evaluated one person for injuries, they were not transported to a hospital. By 3:15 p.m., crews began to clear the scene. A local veteran was welcomed with open arms to a home gifted by U.S. Bank and Ashton Woods today.  U.S. Army Sgt. Christopher Hayden received the keys to his new Amarillo Creek home on North Eva Lane this morning through a donation by U.S. Bank through its Housing Opportunities after Military Engagement program with the Freedom Alliance’s Heroes to Homeowners program.  Hayden suffered a traumatic brain injury after a vehicle borne improvised explosive device slammed into a Humvee next to his car, which caught fire and was hit with shrapnel in April 2005. Updated 9:25 a.m., April 23, 2024.  More than 33,000 Maricopans and western Pinal County residents went without power at the height of rush hour this morning, affecting not only power inside homes, businesses and schools, but also traffic signals. The outage affected 33,708 residents in Maricopa, Hidden Valley, Mobile and the Ak-Chin Indian Community as of 8:30 a.m., as well as some Arizona Public Service customers in Casa Grande. Drunken man shoots up street sign, gets free ride to jail

A highly intoxicated Maricopa man was arrested and jailed after he shot off a gun, destroying a street sign in the early morning hours, police said. Marcos Castro, 28, he was prohibited by law to possess the weapon, police said, and faces charges of DUI with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15, nearly twice the legal limit. He also faces charges of misconduct with a weapon and possessing liquor in a vehicle, Maricopa police stated in a probable cause report. The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office reports a registered sex offender has moved to Maricopa. Larry W. Burns, 74, has moved to a residence at 45359 W. Applegate Road in the Alterra community, PCSO reports. He is described as 5 foot five, 120 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. The sheriff’s office, by law, is required to inform residents when a convicted offender moves to a neighborhood. He formerly lived in Queen Creek, and was convicted of his offenses in Arizona, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Alleged car thief released without charges

A woman handcuffed on State Route 347 after she was accused of stealing a car in Phoenix Saturday afternoon was released without criminal charges.  Cops responded to a west Phoenix home on the 7600 block of West Sheila Lane just after 11:45 a.m. that day on reports of a stolen car, according to a Phoenix Police Department spokesperson.  “The victims provided officers with tracking information on the vehicle,” the spokesperson said.   Police surveilled the car until “tactical support units” stopped it near SR 347 and Riggs Road and arrested the driver.  An update from Phoen ..read more
