Parenting... where minutes, hours and days can slow to a snail's pace, but the weeks, months and years fly by like never before. And this week is a milestone that triggers a bit of reflection: It is hard to believe that it has been two years since I announced I would retire from my pro cycling career.   The time since has been a continued time of transition where I have been confronted with challenges and bumps (sometimes massive potholes) in the road, but I have also relished new freedoms and joys of the wide-ranging world that exists outside the bubble of pro cycling.   I ..read more

An Off-Season Like No Other

The “off” season heading into 2021 had a different feel than years past.  Sometimes, it was hard to tell if it was the pandemic or being a first-time parent that had the bigger influence but combining them means that October-January looked much different from previous years. Fortunately, we were still able to travel back to our USA home in Asheville. Now that Waylon is mobile and wanting to see, touch, and taste everything, the trip was exhausting.  I can’t believe that I used to complain and dread the travel days where I could put on headphones, zone out, and watch a movie or ..read more

As we navigate this challenging time, I wanted to check-in. Jamie, Waylon, and I have been in Asheville for a few weeks now and although the trip from Girona to the US was an extremely tense challenge, we are so thankful to be here and amongst such a loving and helpful community, even when interactions need to happen from a distance. Waylon, Jamie & Brent Bookwalter celebrate Waylon's first Spring in Asheville NC Fortunately, Jamie and I are sharing quarantine with our little guy, Waylon, and he provides a sweet form of distraction. Daily, we are immersed into and tested by life as ..read more

Off-Season After breaking my wrist at Milan-Torino, the ever short “off” season snuck up on me. My season was unexpectedly over and I didn’t race in China, which was a small consolation prize.  While far-flung races in October are never my favorite, I still would always rather be racing than injured.  The wrist forced me to take some time off the bike. We headed back to North Carolina in preparation for the 6th edition of the Bookwalter Binge, and those weeks are always full-on with final details and friends coming into town. It served as a great way to “break” from the season.   I rece ..read more

People may have noticed that Jamie wasn’t riding the Binge this year…and it was for the best reason possible. She was six months pregnant at the time. It was such a thrill to announce the news in front of the Binge community. So by far, the biggest change for the 2020 season is Baby Bookwalter is due any day now! The biggest difference to this year’s pre-season is that I’m looking at the future through the lens as an expecting parent. We came back to Girona earlier this year than previous years so ..read more

Lookback - 2019 Binge

2019 was the sixth edition of the Binge! Each year, we grow in terms of quality, experience, and impact. We don’t necessarily aim to grow in size---we focus on improving the design, impact and experience of everyone involved from riders to volunteers to sponsors. One of the things we love about the Binge is that it connects us with our US community, which is where we will eventually call a more permanent home. The event is nicely sized so we can support personal connections with everyone involved from volunteers, Bingers, and pro riders. We also keep seeing the same crew return every y ..read more

Where I’m Spending My July
Brent Bookwalter

I’ll open with a rare piece of insight I’ve garnered these past few weeks: the Tour de France is pretty enjoyable when you get to watch it loosely and just casually follow along. I'm definitely not glued to the TV, but it's interesting to catch a few minutes here and there and check in on my teammates and other friends in the peloton. Seeing it from the outside actually gives me some deeper perspective and appreciation for having been there a handful of times, particularly winning it with Cadel back in 2011. So far, my favorite moments have been my teammate Daryl's stage win and seeing my b ..read more
