Hello! I'm an undergrad student struggling a bit (read: a lot) with the concept of vorticity, and specifically absolute and potential vorticity conservation:
intuitively (or rather, physically), why should absolute vorticity be conserved for a barotropic fluid but not a baroclinic one? I've seen some people talk about vorticity conservation in terms of angular momentum conservation but I'm not sure how to think about that in a continuum context seeing as how it's hard to define angular momentum of a single fluid parcel. In the baroclinic vorticity equation, you've got stretching, tilting and ..read more

I am currently a 17 year old highschool student in western PA and have a passionate obsession with weather. I enjoy the way it affects me in my every day life and always get super excited when I see a storm rolling in. I love checking and reading my ambient weather station every day and looking at forecasts. That being said I am about to graduate and it’s time I start figuring out what I’d like to do with my life. I always here about how If you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life. So obviously meteorology comes to my mind. But as we all know jobs in this field are difficult ..read more

OK. I'm here to ask a question/questions and also make sure I am correct in my understanding of what I want to say to a friend who is a huge conspiracy theorist across a wide gamut of subjects and it gets tiring. Anyway, today's comment was about the flooding in Dubai with the final sentence essentially saying it was due to cloud seeding.
So, I feel like I know what cloud seeding is. I know it has been around for a long time in theory and practice and is still used to help clouds precipitate. Pretty sure that includes some arid middle eastern countries. To me, cloud seeding isn't a conspiracy ..read more

My teen is interested in meteorology as a career:
-does this typically require a graduate degree? -is this usually shift work? -what Canadian universities have good programs?
Any other info is welcome! Thanks!

Hey everyone, I’ve been using the Ventusky app for a couple months now and I really like it. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell if hail is in the forecast when it rains? We had some nasty hail damage about a month ago and I would like to be more prepared next time around. Thanks in advance!

This happened last December, but it’s been on my mind since. I took the Amtrak through the Rockies in CO, and while on the train I looked up at the mountains, and on a plateau that was small in width, but great in altitude, I saw a twister made from the snow and vapors! Looked about the size of a large dust-Devil, but also it was so high up that my sense of scale was undoubtedly warped, but I was so certain of what I had seen. Tried doing some research, and the closest image I could find to what it looked like was in this article.
I tried to snap a photo, but the train ducked into a tunnel be ..read more
