I'm finally ready to self-publish, but the process seems quite complex, what are the best practices?

I've been working on a memoir for the better part of four years and after going through the trad-pub route I'm ready to self-publish it. About three years ago, I secured an agent, who pitched my proposal to editors at HC, Penguin, etc., but I got turned down. I've rewritten the book several times and am really excited about the material, but I don't want to go through the headache of trying to get it published traditionally. I think it has a chance of being reasonably successful with my niche (I have a decent social media following of around 100k), but obviously, the big challenge with self-p ..read more

Podium or Self Publish?

I have been writing a Fantasy Litrpg for a while now (5 months). I have finished book one and reached the middle of book two. I had considered self-publishing and found a narrator who would do it in the realm of 3000 bucks, which I could afford without financially putting myself in a bad spot. Out of curiosity, I reached out to Podium, who is interested in acquiring the audio rights to my story, and I am unsure what the better call would be. I am still due to meet with their director of acquisition and will ask what they can offer precisely and have a lawyer look over any potential contract ..read more

Hello, I have published a mix puzzle book (a collection of 100 puzzles including Sudoku, Cross word, Word scramble etc.). I would be grateful if someone can suggest ways to get reviews. I have heard about pubby but not sure if it makes sense for this genre of books. Any other suggestions? submitted by /u/Sahil-Khurana [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi! Thank you in advance for your help! I’m writing a children’s book and need some advice. I have limited budget. Is it worth it to take a master class or to pay for a writing coach? Is hardback the only way to go for a children’s book? What do you wish you would have done/knew when you wrote your first children’s book? Thank you! submitted by /u/missgemini2022 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

This is probably the biggest indie genre book competition around, but I didn't see a post about it yet, so I wanted to give you fine folks a heads up that today is the only day to submit your self-published SFF books for 2024. https://mark---lawrence.blogspot.com/2018/06/the-official-self-published-fantasy.html It's a great little contest that can put even small titles in front of a large audience. I've tried on and off since the start, and while I've never won, it's a lot of fun! Entry is totally free and the whole thing's done by volunteers. It's only open to books that will be published be ..read more

I've joined so many facebook groups and discord servers but they're a deluge of premade covers. I like to work closely with the author and do a bespoke design but really struggle to find the right places. I signed up to Reedsy months ago and still waiting for approval... submitted by /u/littleforestcat [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Would you license your works to an AI?

I think most people have heard how the big AI companies have grabbed whatever they can get their hands on to train their large language models (LLM). And smaller companies are using text based content to fine tune those models for domain specific applications. The big AI companies have recently, and reluctantly, began to enter into licensing agreements with some publishers and content aggregators (Axel Springer and Reddit come to mind). This post might actually be used to train OpenAI's next model. Given that, if you had the ability to upload your content to service and that makes it availabl ..read more

Hey guys, I'm really new to writing and publishing, I'm currently editing my first manuscript. Self-publishing is an option I'm currently considering at the moment, but I am concerned about the financial aspect. I have seen someone on tiktok who claimed they got their cover ordered from a website called GetCovers.com The cover looked really nice, and the website looks professional too! My biggest concern is that it might be too good to be true. I mean...the prices are quite cheap compared to what freelancers charge! What do you guys think? Has anyone used them for their cover? And are they ac ..read more
