The UK government has rejected findings from the Misogyny In Music report published in January, to the disappointment of music industry figures in the UK, NME reports. Earlier this year, the Women And Equalities Committee (WEC) warned the UK government that “urgent action” was needed to tackle the “boys club” and “gendered power imbalances” in an industry “dominated by self-employment.” Elsewhere in the report, it was found that non-male professionals in the music industry faced harrowing rates of sexual harassment and abuse. In a 2019 survey conducted by the Musicians’ Union, 48 per ..read more

It’s hard to believe that you’re probably reading this story on your phone or some sort of mobile device. Back when I started writing for this publication, I would type my column on a dodgy old typewriter, jump in my Gemini, drive to the office late on a Sunday night, slide the column under the door and somehow, it would miraculously appear in the paper that hit the streets three days later. For me, Wednesday mornings in Melbourne used to mean one thing – “Exile On Bob Street”. There was quite a team back in those “old days” of Inpress – founding editors Andrew Watt and Rowena Webber, assistan ..read more

From ‘On The Street’ To ‘Drum Media’ To ‘The Music’

In the before times, social media was on the street rather than on the screen. The Music’s predecessor was literally called On The Street, a music and arts newspaper distributed for free around the city and into the suburbs via record stores and cafes. Known as ‘street press’, few papers like this formed the backbone of the industry – free to access, breeding grounds for all types of creatives, and beloved by audiences. Part of the hidden history of street press is the hidden legacy of women in the music business. Unlike newspapers and ‘rock mags’ like Go-Set or Juke, in Sydney, the scene was ..read more

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have revealed their 16 inductees for this year - and let’s just say the Class of 2024 is a doozy.  The diverse list, spanning from RnB to good old-fashioned rock, includes Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, the late Jimmy Buffett, and many more. Cher’s award comes with a side of reservation. The legendary singer recently said some choice words about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Kelly Clarkson’s show. “I’m not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars … I’m never going to change my mind. They can just g ..read more
