Out of 210 winning NEVI applications (the amount for which we have obtained the match percentage amount), 40% of applicants have submitted a bid with the NEVI minimum 20% match. Said another way, 60% of these applications included a match of 21% or higher, with 13 percent being an applicant match of 50% or higher.
One-third (33%) of the 210 winning applications had match percentages of between 30% to 49%. And more than one-fourth (27%) had a match percentage of 40% or more.
While a match percentage of greater than 20% has not been a requirement to win NEVI awards (California is a ..read more

Reporters and industry observers always seek a simple answer to the question of: How many chargers do we need in the US? This often leads to the flawed and over-simplistic calculation of the ratio of EVs in operation to the number of charging ports.
We have, however, tracked and calculated this metric for years, and a reporter recently asked for the data, so we updated the math. Below is a table showing the “best” and “worst” five states when calculating the ratio of BEVs in operation to DC fast charging (DCFC) ports. (Note: Vehicles in operation (VIO) — and also known as car parc — is th ..read more

In 2022, both the US and Canada surpassed one percent of vehicles in operation (VIO) being electric vehicles (both BEVs and PHEVs) for the first time, according to new analysis and estimates from EVAdoption. (See VIO definition at the end of the article.)
While this milestone of 1 out of every 100 vehicles on the road is either a BEV or PHEV in both North American countries is significant, it took five years to reach one percent VIO from 0.25% in the US and 0.18% in Canada in 2017.
The chart below comparing EV sales share (the percent of new vehicle sales that are BEVs and PHEVs) to the VIO p ..read more

Based on EVAdoption estimates, the Tesla Model Y should finish 2023 as the 4th highest-selling vehicle in the US — beating the recent perennial #4, the Toyota RAV4.
A Tesla stumble and RAV4 comeback, however, could alter that with the RAV4 edging out the Model Y. Or a stumble and continued decline in sales of the Ram pickup and a stellar Q2-Q4 for Tesla, and the Model Y could inch out Ram and take the #3 slot.
Regardless of what any of us think of Elon Musk or even the company Tesla, the company is crushing it and has officially gone mainstream. When the Model Y and Model 3 are the number 1 ..read more

Who will be the leading DC fast charge point operators in the US in 2030?
My crystal ball powers are not strong enough to predict precisely who the leading companies will be seven years from now, but I am quite confident that the list of the leading charge point operators (CPOs) will look very different from today.
Many technology markets (not all) see smaller, first-mover companies dominate an industry in the early years. Prior to my focus on the EV/EV charging space I spent 20 years in the digital marketing industry. During the roughly three-year period of 2012-2014, every one of the leading ..read more

On April 6, Walmart announced that by 2030 it intends to build its own DC fast-charging network at “thousands of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations coast-to-coast.” This move by the world’s largest retailer has the potential to shakeup the fast charging industry.
First, let’s look at Walmart’s existing DC fast charging footprint. As of April 6, 2023 using Alternative Fuel Data Center (AFDC) data, 285 Walmart/Sam’s Club stores had DC fast chargers. The majority of these fast chargers (98%) are operated by Electrify America, the second largest US charging network based on number of charging ports ..read more

Hailed as a huge win for auto manufacturers, car dealers, and consumers, the Clean Vehicle Credit (CVC) which is part of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), at least for now is a confusing, hot mess for everyone involved.
On the positive side, we’ve seen a significant number of new battery factories being announced that will be built in the US in the coming years as a by product of IRA and the Clean Vehicle Credit. However, from a consumer perspective, at least, in the short term, the benefits of the CVC will fall well short of the hype coming from the Biden administration.

One of the advantages for EVs over ICE vehicles is their greater torque and quicker acceleration off the line. Tesla was the first OEM to really focus on this and made it a huge part of the Tesla brand positioning — neck snapping acceleration in a family sedan that makes you go “wow.”
I remember years ago when I let my buddy drive my then Tesla Model S 60 (which is not even that quick by today’s standards), and he was blown away. But after you floor your EV a few times and wow friends, the actual value and benefit of having drag race car type acceleration on open public roads with other humans ..read more

Out of 82 BEVs and PHEVs that are either currently available for sale in the US, or expected to be so by the end of 2022, 67 of them, or 81.7%, have a base manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) higher than $39,999, according to new analysis from EVAdoption. Fifteen or 18.3% have a base MSRP below $40,000 and 31 or 37.8% are at $70,000 or higher. (See notes and methodology at the end of this article.)

Electric vehicle sales in the US continue to see a significant uptick, with EV (BEV and PHEV) share of new light passenger vehicles (LPVs) reaching 7.05% in Q2 of 2022. This is a 0.81 percentage point increase from the 6.24% in Q1.
The growth to 7.05% in Q2 2022 is an increase of 2.9 times from the 2.44% EV sales share since the end of 2022. And in the chart below you can see that the quarter over quarter increase in sales share for both BEVs and PHEVs was roughly 13%. If the quarterly increase continues at 13% for Q3 and Q4, the Q4 sales share would reach 9.0%. While US consumers are showi ..read more
