Breaking Boundaries: Teaching Cricket in Primary Schools
As summer fast approaches (hopefully bringing the sunny weather with it), so do the ‘summer sports’ in PE. Traditionally, these are activities such as athletics, tennis, rounders and cricket. Each of these activities comes with different challenges when teaching in primary schools. However, primary school teachers often see cricket as the most daunting of all these summer sports.
Cricket is often seen as a very technical, elitist, and complex sport, requiring a high level of teacher expertise to deliver. It is also viewed as needing an e ..read more

Golfway – Creating Golfers of the Future
Golf. It’s not a sport you hear about enough in schools – and the Golf Foundation is working to change that.
But why is it that golf doesn’t seem to be on the PE radar? Of course, practically, it can be a challenge to teach. Not many schools have an 18-hole golf course at their disposal. And let’s be honest, traditionally, golf has been seen as an elitist sport, leaving it seemingly unreachable for everyday people meaning it is left out of the PE curriculum.

The STEP framework in PE was developed to support teaching and learning. The STEP framework is an easy-to-use approach to adapting, differentiating and extending PE and sports lessons. STEP has been highly promoted over the past 10 years, including being used in PE teaching resources and CPD courses.
The STEP principle is a versatile framework developed by “young leaders” to adapt and differentiate PE activities and games to suit the needs and abilities of all participants. STEP stands for Space, Task, Equipment, and People. By adjusting these four elements, teachers and pupils the ..read more

PE and physical activity support positive well-being for people of all ages, as they help to lift your mood and release endorphins. This is, of course, true for young people, and at The PE Hub, we firmly believe that physical activity helps promote healthier all-around development. The theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is ‘My Voice Matters’, and along with all the physical benefits, physical activity is the perfect way to support young people and inspire their confidence.

Whilst a lot of us will be keeping our lessons indoors over the coming days, sometimes exercising in the cold is simply unavoidable. Here are some top tips from The PE Hub for keeping everyone safe and happy during chilly PE lessons.
Check the surface
If your activities are taking place on a hard surface then check the area for any icy or slippery patches beforehand, or alternatively, on a grass surface check to see if the ground has frozen solid. If any of this is the case, amend the size/location of your activity area and the intensity of the session accordingly. Also make sure that everyone ..read more

How to get involved in Children’s Mental Health Week
Monday 6th February marks the beginning of Children’s Mental Health week. The theme for 2023 is ‘Let’s Connect’ which is especially poignant after the last few years we had. Young Minds reported that one in six children aged 5 to 16 were identified as having a probable mental health problem in July 2021, a huge increase from one in nine in 2017. That’s five children in every classroom.
Maintaining healthy relationships and a sense of community is essential to our well-being. Especially for children as they grow and begin to find their ..read more

Girls Active 2023
At The PE Hub it is our core belief that physical education plays a critical role in developing well-rounded, healthy children and young people.
However, it is unfortunately the case that many children don’t get the opportunities to develop a lifelong enjoyment for games, athleticism, and physical activity, and in particular girls, as has been highlighted in a new study by the Youth Sports Trust. Improving levels of enjoyment and participation is a cause that’s especially close to our hearts.
Over 33% of female pupils surveyed in England said that they do not like takin ..read more

Less than two thirds (64%) of female pupils in England said they liked taking part in PE lessons compared with 86% of male pupils, in a survey by the Youth Sport Trust charity…. Read more (Sky News ..read more
