Racing is as much a results business as football. No wonder David Egan was so delighted to launch his new job with a big win. He has replaced the sacked Kevin Stott as first jockey to football agent Kia Joorabchian’s powerful Amo Racing and made the perfect start to the turf season by landing the £150,000 William Hill Lincoln in the team’s increasingly familiar purple colours. Like a striker shrugging off a missed chance and clinically converting the next one, Egan was undaunted by getting caught in the last 150 yards of the Irish equivalent five days earlier. Happy to hit the front well over ..read more

Luccia ran a blinder to finish third in the Champion Hurdle for Nicky Henderson – but there remain concerns about the trainer’s overall form after all five of his other runners were pulled up. Since Constitution Hill was pulled out of the Champion Hurdle last month, the stable’s form has been under increased scrutiny and, leading into Cheltenham, eight runners in March had comprised a winner, a second, three fifths and three pulled-up runners. There were five more runners pulled up at Cheltenham on Tuesday (Jeriko Du Reponet, Excello, Iberico Lord, Marie’s Rock and Theatre Glory), but Luccia d ..read more

There will be a new name engraved on the Unibet Champion Hurdle trophy next week after reigning champ Constitution Hillwas ruled out of the race by his trainer Nicky Henderson. The participation of last year’s emphatic winner has been in serious doubt since mucus was found in his scope after he trailed home well behind two stablemates in his final serious bit of work before the defence of his Champion Hurdle title at Kempton last Tuesday. A subsequent blood test showed a “significant degree of inflammation” last week suggesting he was “definitely under the weather” in his trainer’s words ..read more

Nicky Henderson has a plethora of exciting young horses heading to the Cheltenham Festival but he named a handicap prospect who may not even make the cut as his “secret weapon” at the four-day meeting next month. The Seven Barrows trainer spoke particularly highly of Doddiethegreat, who is a 12-1 chance for the Coral Cup on March 13 after finishing fourth in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury earlier this month, and Henderson is excited about seeing him step up in trip. Kenny Alexander’s eight-year-old is named after Scottish rugby star Doddie Weir, who raised awareness and funding to tackle m ..read more

Sir Gino moved to 6-4 favourite for the JCB Triumph Hurdle in March following an ultra-impressive victory in the Grade 2 trial at Cheltenham on Saturday. The Nicky Henderson-trained juvenile, who returned at 5-4, powered clear of main market rival Burdett Road after the last to win in comfortable fashion. He was cut to 6-4 favourite (from 9-2) for the Triumph by Betfair Sportsbook, who pushed Burdett Road out to 12-1 (from 10-3) for the same race.  The Trial-festival double was last completed by Defi Du Seuil in 2017. Henderson said: “He’s a lovely horse with all ..read more

Poor scope rules Constitution Hill out of Unibet Hurdle

Constitution Hill will head straight to the Cheltenham Festival after connections ruled him out of the Unibet Hurdle on Trials day at the track on January 27 due to an unsatisfactory scope. But trainer Nicky Henderson emphasised in a statement that the hold-up would “not affect any future plans” for Constitution Hill, who remains long odds-on favourite to retain his Champion Hurdle crown on March 12.  Constitution Hill’s anticipated second start of the season – in what was formerly known as the International Hurdle in its previous slot at Cheltenham’s December meeting – would ha ..read more

‘A dream come true’ for Snowden as Datsalrightgino wins Coral Gold Cup

Lambourn has triumphed in the last two King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but any thoughts the village was tilting full-time to the Flat disappeared in a swashbuckling Coral Gold Cup that was won by Datsalrightgino and had hallmarks of glorious Hennessys from the past. Those vintage editions are what Jamie Snowden, who has been training since 2008 and moved to Lambourn three years later, feasted on when he grew up. Since then he has developed into an accomplished and respected trainer and that point was underlined last season when he saddled Ga Law to win the Paddy Power Gold ..read more

Constitution Hill, the most exciting jumper in training, looked in top order on Friday morning when the finishing touches were applied to his preparations for next week’s BetMGM Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle. Trained in Lambourn by Nicky Henderson, Constitution Hill has been flawless in his seven starts and his four Grade 1 triumphs last season included the Champion Hurdle, when he barely came off the bridle to beat prolific Irish raider State Man. He is set to make his seasonal reappearance at Newcastle on Saturday week in a race he also landed easily last year. Owned by H ..read more

Daniel and Claire Kubler’s Astro King pounced late to land the bet365 Cambridgeshire under top-weight at Newmarket. The six-yar-old gelding was a 20-1 chance under Richard Kingscote and travelled on the inside as the 34-strong field split into several groups down the Rowley Mile. At one stage the race looked to be happening on the other side, but as Greek Order, the smooth-travelling 5-2 favourite, accelerated down the centre as a gap finally came for Harry and Roger Charlton’s hotpot, he took with him the Kubler challenger. In the final strides the two locked horns and it was Astro King that ..read more

Pyledriver, winner of last year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Coronation Cup in 2021, has been retired after the recurrence of a suspensory ligament injury to his off-fore, trainer William Muir announced on Tuesday. The six-year-old was on course to feature in Saturday’s Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton before a potential crack at the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe next month. After a “pretty brilliant” workout on the gallops on Friday, Muir, who trains in partnership with Chris Grassick, started to have concerns when Pyledriver returned to the yard. Muir told the ..read more
