In the past several years I have noticed certain tendencies amongst the nonfiction books I like to read; topics or themes that come up again and again. One of those, perhaps unsurprisingly, happens to be walking (I’ve even created a “walking” tag on my Storygraph account to keep track of it). I thought I’d share ..read more

I’m picking up where I left off after an unintended pause in my blogging plans. In my last post I promised to share more about the name of the Wandrian cowl, in the first, and then later this week I’ll have some reading recommendations to share related to the theme. Wandrian is an Old English ..read more

I’m so pleased to have new work to share today! While I think I had at least one new pattern per year during my PhD, much of that was work for Amirisu or other publications, and the last time I published a new Paper Tiger pattern was December 2020. Now that I have the opportunity ..read more

I first learned to spin yarn in 2013. I bought a drop spindle (a Louet bottom whorl) and some fiber together in a learn-to-spin kit, bought a Craftsy course, and got to work. My first few of skeins of yarn were documented on this blog (one, two, and three) and I did see rapid improvement ..read more

On October 31, I defended my PhD thesis, finally bringing a transformative 5-year journey to an end. Of course, I had to knit something to wear for it. Given that a viva is a big once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, I gave a lot of thought to the clothes I would wear. In Norway the defense ..read more

Back in June, I finished knitting a garment for myself for the first time since 2022 (more specifically, since becoming a parent). Clearly, a milestone worth documenting. Last autumn I knit a plain stockinette sweater for my kid and I found the stockinette in the round both so soothing and so easy to throw in ..read more

September went by in a flash. It was a busy month of strange highs and lows on a personal level, but I looked for the small moments of beauty and joy where I could find them. On September 1, I had to turn the heaters on, and by this past final weekend of the month ..read more

Back in 2020, my Bramble Mitts (Ravelry link) were published in Amirisu. The pattern sample was worked up in Quince & Co. Finch, and if memory serves, this was the magazine’s choice. My original preference for the design was Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift, due both to the huge range of colors available and the put-up in ..read more

Some of you may know that when we lived in Montreal, I worked at Espace Tricot for a time. My colleagues and the community around the store became my knitting family there, and when Lisa and Melissa decided to move on, I was thrilled when my former store colleagues Steph and Naomi took over the helm. I was even more thrilled when they reached out at the beginning of this year to let me know they were working on a book, and would I like to be a part of it? (Would I?! Yes!!)
Now we’re days away from the release of Knits from the LYS: a Collection by Espace Tricot on Friday December 15, and my c ..read more

The main pattern work I’ve done alongside working on my PhD has been a series of patterns for Amirisu, all but one of which I’ve shared on the blog already (see my previous posts on Bramble and Blomsterkrans, and Kitchen Stories). My fourth and final pattern for Amirisu was published in issue 24, the spring/summer 2022 issue. And it happened to be my very first shawl design.
Scallops and Blooms is a basic triangular shawl, knit in garter stitch with a stockinette panel along the bottom to provide a smooth surface for embroidery. The embroidered motifs and the scalloped crochet edge stand out ..read more
