The definition of sport can really be debated. Is horseback riding a sport, even though the horse is doing most of the work? How about driving a racecar, where the most movement that occurs inside the car is a few inches down on the pedal and a few inches left on the steering wheel? If sport can be defined as something that has to get you exercise, then there are many sports that simply wouldn’t make it (we’re looking at you, chess!). There’s no doubt, though, that even though martial arts training from us is an excellent means of self-defense, it’s also a fun and engaging sport. In fact, our ..read more

Why So Few Martial Arts Come From America

Martial arts training has evolved quite a bit over the centuries and millennia. One martial art begins as a philosophy, but then becomes combative as an army approaches. Another might start as a form of dancing and then morph into a way to protect escaped slaves deep in the South American jungle. So many martial arts have names that sound strange to American ears, and there’s a good reason for that: most martial arts simply aren’t from America. As good as America is at inventing things, you’d think we would be exporting our martial arts by now. But no, we’ve almost exclusively importers. Here ..read more

Every so often we like to take a look at reviews that people are leaving for our Lyndhurst martial arts school. First, let’s hear from Amy and the experience her daughter has had with Dragon Force, our martial arts classes for kids ..read more

Summer is almost here, and now is the time that many parents will be talking with their child about summer sports programs. For the child with baseball posters all over their walls, their summer sports program is probably already established. Baseball is probably all they’ve been thinking about all spring! But for many kids (including younger kids who don’t yet have an obsession with a particular sport), it might still be up in the air as to which summer sports program they’ll be engaging in Lyndhurst. If your kids have never tried martial arts, now might be the time! Let’s take a look ..read more

In our most recent article we discussed short histories of fighting styles and the translations of martial arts names. We told you how judo is most often translated as “gentle way,” Muay Thai most likely means “to make things united,” and karate means “empty hand.” Jiu Jitsu, in addition to having multiple spellings and hyphenations, can mean “gentle art,” “flexible art,” “pliable art,” or “yielding art.” We really enjoyed telling you about each of them, because martial arts is as much about knowledge as it is about sparring. If there were no knowledge associated with martial arts, the ..read more

It’s interesting how words become commonplace in the English language. Grow up around the word cul-de-sac and you never question why it’s called that. (It’s French for “bottom of the bag,” by the way.) The same goes for many of the martial arts disciplines that are out there. The first time you see the words jiu jitsu on the window of a strip mall, you might think them funny. But after a while the words are just part of the vocabulary…even if you don’t know the origin or what they mean. We thought it might be fun to go through the most common types of martial arts that you might happen ..read more

We all know that most kids have a blast when they’re in a martial arts class. While it’s a structured environment, it’s also a place where kids can be kids, which means learning, movement, and interaction with other kids their age. Have you ever stopped to question why kids are prone to enjoying martial arts classes? We have some ideas. They Have The Power Back when Mattel was developing a new toy back in the 1980s, they put a bunch of boys in a room and watched them play. They noticed how the boys were constantly talking about power, about how the toys they had were more powerful ..read more
