If you have never experienced a Christmas Eve service I invite you to witness a Holy night!  At the end of PVMC’s service, the congregation stands and sings, “Silent Night” while holding unlit candles. As we sing, ushers light the candles on the aisle from one large candle. Then, one by one, we pass the flame down the rows by lighting our neighbors’ candles, until the sanctuary is lit with the glow of hundreds of flickering lights.  It is a sacred time.  In many churches around the world, on Christmas Eve, lights are dimmed and candles are glowing.  Voices fill sanctuaries ..read more

Father God, I love you and adore you!  This morning I want to say, happy birthday, Jesus!  I want to celebrate Jesus, His birth and His life!  Thank you for sending Your Son to earth, in human form, to feel all of the emotions we would experience.  Thank You for bringing life and hope to us all!  Thank You, Jesus, for dying on the cross for my sins.  Thank You, for rising from the dead three days later so that every Christmas we can celebrate the gift of eternal life!   We live in a broken world that needs good news!  Make that good news real in our ..read more

Blue Christmas

Christmas is a time of joy for many but it can also be a time of sorrow when we have an empty chair at the table.  I pray for those who are experiencing their "first" Christmas without their loved ones and for those still hurting.  Pastor Barry’s Blue Christmas service is a service of reflection and remembrance of healing and hope. The Blue Christmas Service honors the empty chair and memories of  loved ones we have lost by lighting four candles.  The first candle is lit for our love for the loved ones we have lost.  They were God’s gift to us and we are thankful for o ..read more

If you were at the homebound and widows luncheon you were blessed by the food, our devotion and the music  but the fellowship is always the best.  It was a blessing to me to get to walk around and visit and meet those who no longer come or go to another service. I met several ladies I have prayed for but never met face to face.  My eighth grade science teacher was there!    Pastor Barry gave encouraging remarks at this year’s luncheon and his words meant a lot during this time of hustle and bustle!  He asked if people were feeling stressed and ready for the h ..read more

As a mom I could get our house ready, without stress, five days a week, to go to school and work but Sunday mornings were always stressful!  I quickly learned it is Satan not wanting us to go to worship!  Think about it - isn’t Sunday morning harder?  I started recognizing it for what it was and then I was more determined to get there on time, stress free! For years, my mom served in the prayer room during church and she always prayed for those  running late and for those trying to find a parking space. They prayed for people not to get discouraged and come on to worship.&n ..read more

All Saint's Day

November 1st  is All Saint’s Day and PVUMC had their All Saints Services last week on  November 3rd and November 6th.  This yearly commemoration reminds us how we are connected to the church.  We get to celebrate those who gave their hearts and lives to the Lord and now they are with the Lord.  Growing up, I thought saints were statues in some churches.  Later I thought of Mother Theresa and Billy Graham.  A saint I ain’t!  But the Bible teaches us that you and I are saints.  If you are a follower of Jesus, then God calls us a “saint”.  1 Corin ..read more

Nine to Five

I heard a recent sermon by Dr. Charles Stanley that I felt led to share and in keeping with the sermon series,  I have chosen “Nine to Five” by Dolly Parton:  Working nine to five, what a way to make a living.  Barely getting by, it's all taking and no giving. They just use your mind, and they never give you credit. It's enough to drive you crazy if you let it.    So many people dislike their jobs.  Is this where God wants you, even for a season?  If so, then we are to glorify God in all things, including our jobs, where we spend much time.  Colossi ..read more

My family and I had just spent seven days together at the beach enjoying the most beautiful sunsets. The pictures God painted for us in the sky, after the sunset, were amazing.  When we didn’t think it could get any prettier it did!  Dinners were planned around the sunsets!  One night the kids took the boat out and saw 30 dolphins with the sunset in the background!  After the blessing, someone said, “Thank You, Jesus, for letting us see all the dolphins tonight!”  The distant hurricane changed the calm ocean into an angry one and I was in awe of the power in that ocean ..read more

In a Thursday night service we sang, “The Family of God” by the Gaithers.  The gym was full and you could feel the love in that room and you could feel God’s Presence in a mighty way!  I love the words to this song:  “For I'm part of the family ; the family of God.  You will notice we say brother and sister 'round here; it's because we're a family and these folks are so near.  When one has a heartache, we all share the tears, and rejoice in each victory in this family so dear” As Christians, we are all part of the family of God.  John 1: 12-13, “ Yet to all who di ..read more

I have always loved when Christmas specials came on television because it gets me in the spirit of Christmas!  But there is one thing better and that is being at PVMC at Christmas.  What a wonderful weekend.  Saturday morning I got to bring “our boys” to have breakfast with Santa hosted by the Mary Ellen Whitfield Circle.  Santa and Mrs. Clause were there bringing lots of excitement!  The proceeds go to benefit women and children charities in Wilmington.  Saturday and Sunday we had showings of “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, our children’s musical, which was precious ..read more
