Baby wipes are not just a convenience for cyclists on-the-go who want to give their bike a shine, more and more riders rely on disposable cleaning wipes for their everyday (or every week or month) cleaning solution. The Orage wipes are a big step above baby wipes and will give the bike a good clean and tackle oil, grease and grime. For $39.90 you get the tub of 65 wipes and a microfibre cloth. If you don’t want the cloth, just the tub is $37, these prices include shipping Australia-wide. The Orage bike wipes from UNPASS cleaners are made in France and are multi-purpose with the label indicati ..read more

The festival of cycling, hosted each year in January by Tourism South Australia, is a multifaceted event however the men’s and women’s Tour Down Under races are just one part of it. The surrounding events and activities bring increasing relevance to an even broader audience while conveniently keeping everything centred around the city of Adelaide. Of course the men’s and women’s races are the main events and the glue that ties everything together. This is the first opportunity for international stars and teams to present themselves in the new season. The timing however overlaps with January t ..read more

The Tour Down Under kicks off the professional cycling season and hosts international and local stars including Filippo Ganna, Julian Julian Alaphilippe, Caleb Ewan and Lukas Plapp who just secured his third Australian title. It is also a testing ground for new riders and rising stars such as Sam Welsford who took the first stage and GC lead in Stage one. Following the success of fellow Australia Sarah Gigante of Team Movistar in the women’s Tour Down Under, the comparatively flat opening stage is a strong start for the West Australian who has represented Australia in track cycling and is a ne ..read more

Review: Scicon Aeroshade and Aerowing Cycling Sunnies
Bicycles Network Australia
by Christopher Jones

When you buy cycling sunnies, you need to ask these four questions; 1. Are the lenses good, 2. do they have the right lens type, 3. do they fit, and 4. do they look good? I can already tell you that in my experience, the Scicon the lenses are good, like Oakley and ALBA optics. High prices don’t automatically equal high quality and there are a few well known brands that I steer clear of because 1, 2 and 3 are also important. The problem with poor lenses is that your eyes and brain do a good job of correcting these flaws. Distortion in the lenses and inconsistent magnification can be virtually ..read more

Review: The Crankalicious A to Z of bike cleaning
Bicycles Network Australia
by Christopher Jones

Crankalicious is all about keeping your bike clean and running smoothly. I have ample experience using various products, and the most striking drawcards of the young British brand are the brightly coloured liquids and cool names; Pineapple Express cleaning concentrate in yellow, Gumchained Remedy chain cleaner in red, Carboniferous matte finishing spray, and Science Friction ceramic chain lube in white. Crankalicious provides an all-round assortment of cleaning and lubrication products, and while a bike wash, chain cleaner, and chain lube are the basics, the matte finishing spray caught my int ..read more

Under the covers of the 2023 Tour Down Under

The best way to follow a bike race is on TV (provided there is good coverage) but the best way to experience it is by being there… Yes, even when the rider pass by in just 10 seconds. The Tour Down Under is back and features the new race director, two time race winner (in the first edition in 1999 and again 2001) Stuart O’Grady who has retained the proven formula success after a 2 year hiatus while also pushing the race to evolve. The highlight is the introduction of the women’s race as a formal UCI race and escalating it to be an important race on the women’s racing calendar. The mens and wo ..read more

Gymrail – The Finnish Rocker platform for natural indoor cycling and eSports
Bicycles Network Australia

The Gymrail is an indoor rocker solution from Finland that comes close to ‘cracking the code’ and making indoor training feel more natural than ever before. For indoor trainers and accessories there have been a number of steps to introduce a ride feeling closer to outdoor cycling; the Wahoo kickr climb and kickr bikr can simulate climbing, but are still rigid systems, the Oreka O2 (from Spain) is a treadmill with a bungee cord and the Saris Motion Platform (and other rocker plate copies and variations) position a smart trainer and bike on an elevated board with various movement and suspension ..read more

Aerosensor CdA meter with Aerobody position sensor and Aerodrome lap timing to optimise aerodynamics
Bicycles Network Australia
by Christopher Jones

It is no secret that aerodynamics matter. Racing without drafting, skin-tight gear and aero optimisation is unthinkable. The measure of aerodynamic efficiency is CdA, a calculation of the coefficient of drag multiplied by frontal area. In a nutshell, you want the lowest CdA value. This is a reliable reference metric when optimising for aero and for drawing out more watts for every pedal stroke. Wind tunnels are the go-to option for athletes who need body and bike aero optimisation. In lieu of a wind tunnel testing you can rely on a skilled bike fitter. The result is that you are ‘dialled in’ a ..read more
