This Easter weekend marks a soft start of the tourist season for Stockholm. Not the beginning of the busy, high season (which doesn't start until the summer months), but it does mean that several of the main sightseeing tours from the Strömma company start running again after a winter break. Generally, these tours will start out with a couple of departures during the weekdays with more on the weekends and holidays. During the summer high season they will have multiple departures daily. Here are the tours starting up again in April: Royal Canal Boat Tour- this tour is 50 minutes long and tak ..read more

Easter Lunch! Photo by Marie Andersson/Skansen After two years of little or no Easter celebrations, it is nice that we can celebrate it again. If you are visiting Stockholm during the holiday weekend, here is some useful information on how we celebrate the holiday. To start off with... the Swedish word for Easter is Påsk (good to know when visiting the city on Easter weekend). While Sweden is one of the least religious countries in the world, it has loads of bank holidays that are religious in origin. On Easter weekend (April 15th to 18th this year) we have two bank hol ..read more

Did you know that Sweden is one of the world's largest producers of... pop music? You might think: well, yeah, there is ABBA. But, the Swedish contribution to popular music is so much more. Besides other big name artists/groups, like Roxette, Ace of Base, Robyn, Icona Pop and Swedish House Mafia, Sweden has very successful music producers and song writes (Max Martin, Shellback, Denniz Pop, etc.) and chances are that when you are humming a hit song from an American artist, a Swede wrote it. For example, "Can't Stop the Feeling" by Justin Timberlake. There are many theories on the reason ..read more

But now the city is back in business (knock on wood) and events have returned to the calendar! Hopefully this list will be able to help you plan your visit.  Stock ..read more

Yesterday, I visited the Museum of Spirits ("Spritmuseum") with a friend to see the newly opened Pierre et Gilles exhibition: "Troubled Waters" (showing until September 8th). I have always been a fan of the work of Pierre et Gilles and had been looking forward to the exhibition. It was the first time seeing their work on a grand scale and not in a book or magazine... they did not disappoint. In fact, I believe that this is the first time they have had an exhibition of their art in Sweden. When talking with hotel guests, I usually have to explain the name of the museum refers to drinkable sp ..read more

Well, 2022 is here and it unfortunately feels like a repeat, with new variants and returning restrictions. But I remain hopeful that this will be over soon. In the meantime, I will be away for about three weeks of vacation for some much needed R&R. Fingers crossed that I can get back to normal blogging when I return in the beginning of February! Until then, be careful and stay safe ..read more

One of the fun, annual holiday events in Stockholm is the Gingerbread House exhibition at the museum ArkDes (Sweden's National Center for Architecture and Design). This is actually a competition as well and the entries are all on display in the exhibition, until January 9th, with winners being awarded on December 19th. And... you can vote for your favorite either at the museum or on their website. What makes this competition more fun and interesting is that the competitors are split into three categories: architects, people who love to bake and children 12 years or younger. So... you have a ..read more

Restaurant: The Hills

I went out for dinner recently with some fellow expats to celebrate Thanksgiving. No turkey, but we still had a delicious dinner at the restaurant The Hills. I had been to the Hills a couple of times earlier, but usually just for drinks and mostly in the summer when they have a great outdoor seating area. So it was high time that I tried their menu! The restaurant is located on the pedestrian part of the street Götgatan (called Götgatsbacken by the locals), which is just a 10 minute walk from the Hotel Rival. "Götgatsbacken" basically means Götgatan's hill and refers to the way the street s ..read more
