Amsterdamming – Capturing the mood of Amsterdam

Do you believe life moves in circles? In spirals at least? I start to believe it does. I felt it the most this year, my eleventh year of living in the Netherlands, when everything I have built here in terms of relationships simply vanished.  Eleven years ago, like today, I was walking the city streets with the sombre feeling that there’s nobody in Amsterdam for me to at least go for a coffee with. It is a difficult feeling to have. It was hard enough back then, at the beginning of my life here. Today, after more than a decade of building a life in this city, it just feels unbearable.  ..read more

A Day in the Life of Diana in Rotterdam
Amsterdamming – Capturing the mood of Amsterdam

Diana is a gracious force. A business woman with the soul of an artist. Or an artist with a career in business. Both are valid. Her determination and perseverance inspire you to reach for the impossible, while her serene composure and grace can tame your wildest demons.  Diana has only entered my life a few months ago, and yet there are so many things I could write about her already. I’ll start with the beginning. In the summer of 2020, as the world was slowly reopening at the end of the first pandemic wave, she was on a ferry, crossing the Mediterranean sea from Athens to her island of c ..read more

The Amsterdam Woman / De Amsterdame
Amsterdamming – Capturing the mood of Amsterdam

How does one write about the Amsterdam woman – or any category of this kind, regardless of geography – without generalising, idealising, or using clichés? It’s simply not possible. It’s the reason why I take De Amsterdame, the book I would like to talk to you about, with a pinch of salt, which is most likely the intention of its authors. The Amsterdam woman. “A classy woman in sneakers” (…) who flirts and makes use of her womanly skills to get favours, a discount here, a croissant there, who then, like a guy, splits on her scooter across the canals, and drinks a beer like it’s water. She is th ..read more

Anything But Cute

Cuteness overload I have to confess: I have a problem with cute.  Cute is for babies. It is a series of physical features meant to generate a response of protection from the caregivers. Since a baby cannot provide for itself, biology decided that there is a bigger chance for the baby to receive nourishment and care – vital for its survival and the survival of the species – if it displays cute features, such as big eyes. There is nothing about a baby’s appearance that is not cute, and same goes for babies of most mammals. Instinctively you feel that you need to protect them whether they ar ..read more

Stuck The general feeling is that of being stuck. The biggest escape of modern times, travel, is not available at the moment. Or it is, but not in a smart way, and I like smart. Stressed at work? Heartbroken? Simply pissed or not satisfied with the current state of your life? The answer was the same and it was easy: get on a plane. Now I see planes flying in the sky sometimes, and cannot help but wonder who is inside and where they are going. Must be in a fantasy world that these people are living. Yesterday was different. Yesterday I craved travel for the first time in a year. I felt ..read more

Memories with a View
Amsterdamming – Capturing the mood of Amsterdam

Yesterday, as I was painting a scene from my childhood, I had a revelation. My most cherished memories from that time of my life are located in gardens: my grandmother’s garden in southern Romania, where I grew up, the garden of Tarasov family in the Danube Delta, where I spent holidays with my family each summer and where the said painting was inspired from, the garden of Anca, my friend from the Delta, and I am sure I could find a few more. What is it about gardens that makes them so special to me? This is what I was asking myself last night, as I was falling asleep. What follows is the expl ..read more

My City of Homes

The homes of our lives “Happy are the people of one home, just like the people of one love. Most of us do not have such destiny and so, from one home that we take with us the first time we move, with time we end up carrying inside a whole city of homes. People and homes spend together a certain time. As it has been said before, it is not exactly known whether we inhabit the homes or the homes inhabit us. Some homes survive even after being demolished, even after they died, same as a dear human keeps on living inside those who were close to him/her. Usually, it is the homes that outlive us, sti ..read more

The City That Doesn’t Speak

Every year, perhaps every day, new people move to Amsterdam and start calling this city home. They know where they are coming, for good and for worse, but they decide to give it a try anyway. After all, we have the right to make our own impression, built on our own experience. And there is always hope. When all logistics are set, the big quest begins – the search for human contact. And this is the real challenge about the beautiful city of Amsterdam. If you are happy with a few expat contacts at the workplace and someone to meet for a drink every once in a while, then you should be fine. You c ..read more

The Flowers Smelled Better This Year
Amsterdamming – Capturing the mood of Amsterdam

The flowers smelled better this year, there is no doubt. First, there was the explosion of fragrances that hit me as I walked by the garden at Artis in March. The rows of purple hyacinth were a delight for my frozen senses. Then, there was the lilac on the Dijksgracht, a lovely surprise, especially since I had never seen lilac in Amsterdam before. May, the time of its blossoming, would find me in Romania, visiting my family, or traveling. And then came the roses, crawling on façades as if for a better view, red, pink, white, and my favourite, yellow. They were everywhere, turning the city int ..read more

Green & Wet

These rainy days in Amsterdam remind me of what summer used to be like when I moved here: green and wet. Lush vegetation and rain. Even on warm, dry days, the sky would rarely be clear blue, but rather covered in white puffy clouds moving fast because of the wind. The last few days have been like this and I really don’t mind. When I go out for a walk – lately, my only activity in the public space – I take the camera with me, a habit that also reminds me of my beginnings in this city. I take the photos because I like what I see around me, not exactly in an inspiring way – after all, I live here ..read more
